Together ahead |
Dear readers,
As the new Head of Department, I am delighted to welcome you all to this new year. I am honoured to be following in the footsteps of my predecessor David Basin, and I'd like to thank all of you for the confidence you've shown in me. It's an exciting experience working with all kinds of people both within and beyond the boundaries of our department, and I'm also gaining plenty of insight into the executive and organisational processes of ETH as a whole.
Heading a world-leading department like this, and the strategic decisions that come with it, is a great responsibility. I am extremely grateful to be able to work with so many capable colleagues, in particular Ueli Maurer and Kenny Paterson. I would also like to thank David Basin for doing such a fantastic job as my predecessor, and for his terrific support during the transition phase.
We are living in both interesting and turbulent times. The global pandemic is constantly challenging our resilience and our inventiveness, but despite this, our department is still bustling with innovation and progress. In just the past year we have welcomed eight new faculty members (five of them women), strengthening our department with expertise in key areas such as security and privacy, computer systems, machine learning, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence. One of our most recent spin-offs, LatticeFlow, has emerged from the ETH AI Center, and Olga Sorkine-Hornung has been awarded the title of ACM Fellow.
Lastly, this year we celebrate a significant milestone: our department is turning 40. Let us go forward together into this anniversary year and keep supporting each other in these challenging times.
My best wishes to all of our department members, and in particular to all our students in the exams.
Best regards,
Timothy Roscoe Department Head
