Header Discover D-ITET

Dear all at D-ITET,

I would like to thank all of you for your flexibility and endurance during the spring semester, which was held mostly online again and which required – once more – enormous adaptations from many of you! At least the practical training – such as first and second year practical training, P&S, lab work, semester projects and Master’s theses – could be continued in the physical presence of students.

ETH Zurich is now planning to allow for physical attendance at all courses and seminars in the autumn semester 2021. However, the situation remains volatile, and we all need to be prepared to return to online teaching if required. Additionally, some lecturers might continue to use online elements when this delivers added value. More information from the rectorate will follow in due course.

Presently, the forthcoming evaluation of D-ITET, which will take place as an online event in the first week of November, is keeping our department busy. D-ITET and its faculty will be assessed by a group of renowned international scientists. This promises to be a stressful week for many of us, but thanks to the good internal collaboration with faculty and administration we are well on track with our preparations.

I would like to wish all D-ITET members a refreshing summer break – and all students good luck for the upcoming exams! Most importantly, let us be optimistic that the containment of the coronavirus pandemic will succeed, allowing us to return to a “new” normal life in the not too distant future.

With my very best wishes,
Klaas Enno Stephan
Head of Department

Nanosphere at the quantum limit
Nanosphere
Prof. Lukas Novotny and his collaborators from the Photonics Laboratory have trapped a tiny sphere measuring a hundred nanometres using laser light and slowed down its motion to the lowest quantum mechanical state. Based on this, one can study quantum effects in macroscopic objects and build extremely sensitive sensors.

Vanessa Wood: The importance of learning about each other
Prof. Vanessa Wood
At the beginning of February, I participated in a virtual retreat together with my colleagues from the Executive Board. For me, this retreat reinforced how important it is – particularly in these COVID times – to put extra effort into learning about each other and creating opportunities to communicate.
