NADEL Newsletter May 2023
Dear NADEL friends and alumni,

The Agenda 2030 is an important global vision and commitment. But without closing the finance gap of USD 2-3 trillion per year, it will not reach its potential. On 2 May, NADEL hosted a panel discussion to point to the under-utilized ability of Multilateral Development Banks (MDB) to scale up SDG funding and highlight proposals to strengthen their efficiency and effectiveness. The proposals are based on the new book of NADEL’s Chris Humphrey on the role of MDBs in the 21st century. If you missed the event, the next opportunity to engage with inspiring ideas to shape the future will be on 28 June. Mathematician Eugenia Cheng will discuss her framework to forge a path out of gender inequality, division and exclusion.

For the NADEL team,
Fritz Brugger and Isabel Günther

Rethinking gender for inclusive institutions: A conversation with Dr. Eugenia Cheng
If you're interested in how institutions can become more inclusive for women and other under-represented groups, then our upcoming event with Dr. Eugenia Cheng is for you.
Cheng is a mathematician, educator, pianist, public speaker and author, among others, of the book "x+y": A Mathematician’s Manifesto for Rethinking Gender. She will discuss with us how mathematics can help us understand privilege, gender, and other kinds of inequality and proposes a conceptual framework to forge a path out of division and exclusion. Join us for this exciting event at ETH Audimax, at 17:00 on Wednesday, 28 June.

The conference includes an in-person programme in Bern on 5 May and a series of online workshops from 19 April to 31 May on the topic. NADEL's Jasmine Neve and Shruti Patel will give an online workshop on Decolonising Language and Word Choice to examine linguistic bias in research and the implications of word choice in global cooperation (11 May, online). The conference programme on 5th of May in Bern features a panel with a special focus on Swiss research institutions with NADEL's Medinat Malefakis.

The results of the ETH Swiss Panel Global Cooperation 2022 survey are out
Over 3,000 Swiss residents again shared their views on global poverty, migration, and climate change. While most Swiss feel well-informed about global inequality, almost half want more information. The results also show that more information on global inequalities leads to more support for global cooperation. Another interesting finding is that the often discussed socio-economic factors like age, wealth, gender, migration background, or urban-rural divide don't significantly affect Swiss opinions on global cooperation. Political leaning is the only factor correlated with people's positions on global challenges and policies.

Kathrin Durizzo looks smilingly into the camera with her doctor's hat on her head.
Doctoral thesis on inclusive and sustainable health systems in sub-Saharan Africa
Congrats to Kathrin Durizzo for her doctoral defense and outstanding research on Universal Health Coverage. Kathrin combined economics, data science, and public health to analyze how health systems in low-income countries can be more financially sustainable and socially equitable. During her doctoral studies, Kathrin wrote seven academic papers covering the functioning of mandatory health insurance in Tanzania, exclusion of people from health insurance across Africa, COVID-19’s impact on the health systems, essential health services and people’s wellbeing in South Africa and Ghana, and reducing household’s out-of-pocket costs at health centers. Two weeks after her doctoral defense, Kathrin welcomed a daughter to the world: another reason to celebrate!

Frank Otieno Odhiambo on underrepresentation of African scholars in the social sciences
African scholars are under-represented in economics and other social sciences, and a large proportion of research that focuses on Africa is conducted by non-African researchers. We spoke with Frank Otieno Odhiambo, co-founder of GAIN - the Graduate Applications International Network, and doctoral student in Development Economics at the ETH Development Economics Group and NADEL. GAIN supports African students with their applications for globally outstanding social science programs. We spoke to Frank, about the hurdles African students face, the idea behind the programme, and its achievements to date.
