Dear reader,

With the beginning of July, pride-month is over, and the last remaining rainbow flags, a sign of celebrating diversity and standing for equal rights, have been taken down. During her farewell lecture, we learned that it was thanks to our former rector and queer role model Prof. Sarah Springman that the LGBT flag was put up at ETH. This spurred several developments at ETH, including an ETH-wide strategy for diversity and inclusion and for the first time this year ETH Zurich was present at Zurich Pride.

At ETH4D, the fight for equality and against discrimination is particularly important. Together with our community, we conduct workshops on diversity and inclusion, to fight racist and discriminatory practices. Recently, there have been positive developments in research for global development: The renowned medical journal “Lancet” pledged to reject papers that don’t acknowledge African researchers, and African researchers are leading a campaign for equity in global collaboration. These are only the first small steps, but change does not happen overnight.

Together, we can make a difference. In the words of Prof. Sarah Springman’s wife Rosie Mayglothling: “To make a difference in someone’s life, you don’t have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful or perfect, you just have to care”. We hope that we are as courageous and effective as she was.

Best wishes,
Adina Rom and Priya Mohanty

Industry Day
Save the Date: Industry Day on 7 September 2022
On 7 September 2022, the ETH Industry Day will provide a platform for industry to meet ETH researchers and ETH spin-offs. ETH4D will participate in the exhibition with two projects: Seismohealth, an AI platform that maximises the safe life of buildings and bridges and minimises their environmental footprint. And Kapok, a fully automated and low-cost sustainability certification system of commodities in the tropics based on public Earth observation satellite images.

Watch the Seminar: Chris Barrett on Food Security Challenges for a Changing World
In June, we joined the ETH World Food System Center to host a public seminar with food system economist Prof. Chris Barrett, who shared his research and insight into food security challenges. At the seminar, Prof. Barrett commented we should embrace the urgency of failing food security but reject the alarmism of describing a looming food catastrophe. His talk is now available on video.

How to Provide Electricity Access for 600 Million People in Sub-Saharan Africa
In a recent publication in Nature Energy, E4D Doctoral Fellow Churchill Agutu and colleagues from the Energy and Technology Policy Group as well as the Climate Finance and Policy Group at ETH Zurich emphasise the importance of accounting for realistic financing conditions in electrification models. Their results indicate that solar PV powered stand-alone systems could play a bigger role in reaching SDG #7 on the continent by 2030 than previously assumed.

Fighting the Pandemic in Africa: When Distancing Rules are Futile
The coronavirus pandemic has made people around the globe realise how important individual behaviour is for mitigating the spread of diseases. But is it possible to comply with distancing rules everywhere in the world? Researchers from the Development Economics Group at ETH Zurich and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute have created a risk map showing which regions in Africa may face a faster spread of infectious diseases due to lacking infrastructure.

Six Research Priorities to Support Corporate Due-Diligence Policies
Global supply chains are often complex, making it difficult to conduct due diligence on corporate sustainability. Because voluntary pledges by companies are often ineffective, policy frameworks are needed to expand and harmonise due diligence, and research is needed to support this. In light of this, researchers have identified six research priorities to generate the knowledge needed to develop effective policies.
