Dear Reader,
ETH Zurich is constantly evolving. Digitalisation in particular is leading to greater penetration of ICT resources in many areas and is changing the way ETH members work in the long term. Change is therefore also part of everyday life at ITS.
In the current inside|out, we demonstrate this using three examples. From this autumn semester, the school is gradually introducing the "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) obligation. In close collaboration with the Rectorate, ITS's Educational IT Services are preparing the technical requirements for BYOD. As part of the further development of our Windows, Linux and macOS services, we work together in Product Centers across various divisions and with colleagues from the departments. At the same time, we are very aware that information and cyber security are becoming increasingly important. The ITS has therefore created a new division in order to pool expertise in these areas and thus increase impact and effectiveness.
Read about these and other topics in inside|out!
Kind regards, Dr Rui Brandao

This is what BYOD would have looked like 40 years ago. Fortunately, things are a little easier today: Kornel Le Grand (AkD), Alexandra Ciorciaro (ITS), Nadim Ritter (ITS), Peter Bencze (AkD), Franziska Klarer (UTL) and Daniel Flück (UTL), from left to right |
Bring Your Own Device at ETH |
From the autumn semester 2024, the mandatory Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy will apply to new students at all levels at ETH. Over the next few years, the use of student laptops in lectures, tutorials and examinations will become the new standard. Together with the Rector's Computational Competencies Project, this will further improve practical, authentic teaching at ETH. In concrete terms, this will result in further innovative teaching and learning scenarios and create urgently needed additional capacity for digital examinations.
The Educational IT Services division (ITS EduIT) is working on a joint project with Academic Services (AkD) and the Unit for Teaching and Learning (UTL). You can find more information about BYOD on the BYOD overview page.

Wearing different hats allows us to switch between different roles, to remain flexible and versatile, and to express our different talents and abilities: Benjamin Baum, Thomas Berchtold, Juraj Novak, Roger Holderegger and Lars Tremmel, (all ITS), from left to right |
ITS "Product Center" pilot project |
Expertise is currently spread across many specialist areas within IT Services. With the first newly introduced "Product Centers", we have therefore defined how we want to work together more efficiently in future.
The biggest change? Our collaboration model in the Product Centers is organised directly around customers and products. This enables us to work together efficiently, independently and in a self-organised manner in order to optimally implement our heterogeneous customer requirements. Further information can be found in the corresponding ETH Internal News Agile into the future with the new ITS Product Centers.

In order to further strengthen cyber and information security at ETH Zurich, the organisational structure was adapted. Cyber and Information Security (CISEC) |
ITS has had a new division called Cyber and Information Security (CISEC) since April 2024. This plays a crucial role in protecting ETH Zurich from potential threats and attacks.
The CISEC division develops security guidelines, monitors the IT infrastructure for risks, organises security awareness campaigns and responds to cyber attacks. It is the point of contact for information security issues, works closely with the Information Security Officers (ISO) and ensures cyber and information security at ETH Zurich. It also evaluates and implements new technologies for defence against threats and exchanges information with other institutions. CISEC manages ETH's Information Security Management System (ISMS) and prepares reports on cyber and information security for the Executive Board. The new division is divided up into the following teams: |
• | | Information Security Governance |
• | | Attack Surface Management |
• | | CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team) |

How do students connect to the Wi-Fi on campus? |
ETH students connect to the wireless network "eduroam" to get internet access at ETH and log in as follows: |
• | | User name: @student-net.ethz.ch |
• | | Password: ETH network password |
|
Please note: After the @, the realm (the network zone) is specified, not the email address! |

Wi-Fi goes Wi-Fi 7: Impact on ETH Zurich |
The release of the 6 GHz frequency band represents the largest and most important expansion of the available frequency spectrum since the introduction of the 5 GHz band around 20 years ago. This expansion is implemented from the Wi-Fi 6E standard onwards. What does this mean for ETH Zurich? |
