Science and politics: an exciting relationship
The summer session of the National Council and Council of States begins on 31 May. Interesting for the ETH Domain are the popular initiative "Yes to the ban on animal and human experimentation", debates on the relationship between science and politics, and a motion calling for campaigns against harassment at the two Federal Institutes of Technology.

The RNA (yellow) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus forms a pseudoknot structure (multicolored, bottom right) which leads to a shift in the reading frame of the ribosome (brown). In this way, the viral RNA controls the production levels of the viral proteins. (Graphic: Said Sannuga, Cellscape.co.uk / ETH Zürich, The Ban Lab)
The Achilles heel of the Coronavirus
SARS-CoV-2 is critically dependent on a special mechanism for the production of its proteins. A collaborative research team led by ETH Zurich obtained molecular insights into this process and demonstrated that it can be inhibited by chemical compounds, thereby significantly reducing viral replication in infected cells.

Many glaciers in the region exhibit steep headwalls and surface debris, which is why conventional glacier models do not apply well to them. “24K Glacier” in the Kangri Karpo Mountains in the south-eastern Tibetan Plateau, October 2019. (photo: Marin Kneib)
The fate of many Asian glaciers is sealed
Some 250 million people depend on water from the glaciers of High Mountain Asia, which include the Himalayas, the Karakoram and the central Asian ranges. A study led by WSL shows that this largest non-polar ice mass on Earth is in dire condition.
