3D-printed insoles measure sole pressure directly inside the shoe
Researchers at ETH Zurich, Empa and EPFL are developing a 3D-printed insole with integrated sensors that allows the pressure of the sole to be measured directly inside the shoe and thus during any activity. This helps athletes or patients to determine performance and therapy progress.

Due to a warming climate, the amount of cooling energy is likely to increase further in future and have a major impact on the energy balance of buildings. Image: Adobe Stock
Lower energy consumption thanks to daylight-saving time
The elimination of daylight saving time is a frequently – and heatedly – discussed topic. Often, only the aspect of electricity consumption due to artificial lighting is considered. In a new study, Empa researchers have now analyzed whether daylight saving also has an impact on the heating and cooling energy required for office buildings, and which role climate change might play in this. The results should delight supporters of daylight-saving time.

The consequences of stress and trauma can be passed on to the offspring via epigenetic factors. (Photograph: Adobe Stock)
The legacy of trauma
Emotional trauma can have far-reaching ripple effects and may even reverberate across generations. ETH Professors Isabelle Mansuy and Katharina Gapp study how the effects of trauma can be inherited through epigenetic mechanisms.

The DRS4 (Domino Ring Sampler) developed at PSI is a microchip that, simply put, integrates an ultrafast oscilloscope onto a surface the size of a fingernail. The temporal resolution is less than ten trillionths of a second. With that, researchers can find particles that arise from muon decay processes. (Graphic: Studio HübnerBraun)
What can’t be bought, we develop ourselves
The work of PSI researchers is pushing the limits of knowledge and technological development. Many components for their experiments cannot simply be purchased. In that case they just develop what’s needed themselves – and thus encourage many other applications in science or industry.
