Ukraine has lost 18% of its scientists due to the war
18% of Ukraine’s scientists have fled due to the war and research capacity is down 20%, according to EPFL researchers in a study where they urge stakeholders to plan future policies to ensure the return of talent for rebuilding Ukraine.

One Legionella rarely comes alone
Numerous microorganisms, including Legionella, live in biofilms in shower hoses. A team from the aquatic research institute Eawag has now investigated and characterised such microbial communities and analysed their interaction with this pathogen. The results may contribute to a better understanding of the ecology of Legionella and support the possible development of a probiotic approach for the control of Legionella.

ETH Zurich receives major donation and plans research centre in Germany
ETH Zurich and the Dieter Schwarz Foundation have signed a far-reaching letter of intent to establish a new teaching and research centre for responsible digital transformation with a global reach. Thanks to the foundation’s donations, around 20 new professorships are to be created over the next 30 years in Zurich and on the foundation’s teaching campus in Heilbronn.

Charging electric cars without cables
Eight stakeholders from business, science and the public sector launched the first project for wireless charging of electric vehicles in Switzerland at the end of November 2023. The project team is investigating the technical feasibility of inductive charging under everyday conditions, determining the advantages and disadvantages compared to conventional charging systems and clarifying the approval process.

EPFL and UBS are launching a strategic partnership to promote innovation and young entrepreneurship. The cooperation also focuses on expanding access to education in STEM subjects for children and young people and promoting young talent.
