Dear all at D-ITET,

I hope you have all had a successful start to the new semester. In particular, I would like to welcome our new students! I hope that you will find our department a place where you can flourish and grow, both intellectually and socially. Please also join me in welcoming Prof. Mickaël Perrin among our faculty, and Anna Samoylenko as new temporary member of the PR team.

Once again, I am pleased to say that our department has had numerous achievements to celebrate over the past few months. I can only mention three of them here: First, Prof. Ender Konukoglu has been appointed as Associate Professor of Biomedical Image Computing. Furthermore, Prof. Kaveh Razavi has received a prestigious federally funded ERC Starting Grant. Finally, the ForzaETH team – a team of students from the Center of Project-Based Learning at D-ITET (PBL) and the Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI) – won gold at the 2022 F1TENTH Autonomous Grand Prix Germany. Our very best congratulations!

Moving from the present to the past, it is worth highlighting that D-ITET also has many inspiring alumni. For example, Wera Hotz Kowner was the first woman to study electrical engineering at ETH Zurich. You can read more about her life and achievements in the article below.

Before the start of the semester, several events with big outreach all happened in-person again – some for the first time since 2019. To name a few of them: the ETH Information Days 2022 for high-school students took place at the main building where D-ITET was present with various exhibits, presentations, and demonstrations. Also, the ETH Industry Day with its research, case study, and spin-off talks was attended by more than 600 visitors. At the event, Prof. Hua Wang, head of the Integrated Devices, Electronics, and Systems (IDEAS) Group, and Prof. Fisher Yu from the Computer Vision Lab (CVL) presented their exciting research – you can read more about it in the section on past events.

I wish you a happy and successful semester!
