CLE Tidbits
On September 18, CLE postdoc Benjamin Arold won the "Fürther Ludwig Erhard Prize 2023", endowed with 5'000 EUR. Since 2003, this prize has been awarded by the Ludwig Erhard Foundation to recently graduated scientists, whose dissertations are innovative and relevant for the economy, society, and the environment. In his dissertation School Curricula, Educational Trajectories, and Labor Market Outcomes, Benjamin Arold provides empirical evidence that school curricula have a considerable influence on crucial choices of students in their adulthood. He won the award because of the important insights his thesis provides to the parties in charge of the education system, as well as to society as a whole. Already at the beginning of the year, his dissertation had been chosen as the "Best Dissertation in Economics of Education 2021/2022" by the Economics of Education Committee of the Verein für Sozialpolitik (German Economic Association).

Prof. Stefan Bechtold has recently been named Associate Vice President IP Policy at ETH Zurich. This appointment is part of the plan of the Executive Board of ETH Zurich to dedicate more resources to the strategic development of intellectual property issues at ETH Zurich. In his new role, Stefan Bechtold will tackle topics such as guidelines for open source software at ETH, training and awareness-raising measures for researchers regarding IP issues, and strategic matters in the Office of Corporate Relations and Knowledge Transfer. For more information, please read here.

On November 3 & 4, 2023, the 4th AI Policy Summit will take place at ETH Zurich. Organized by RegHorizon and the CLE, the AI Policy Summit is a unique opportunity for policymakers, business leaders, civil society, and academia to exchange ideas and co-create the future of AI policies. The organizers are particularly delighted about the new strategic partnerships with UNESCO and University of Zurich's Digital Society Initiative (DSI). The AI Policy Summit 2023 will be held in a hybrid format on ETH Zurich's main campus and via online broadcasts. The registration for the summit is still open.

At the beginning of September, the LATSIS Symposium 2023 and the Zurich IP Retreat 2023 took place in Zurich. Co-organized by Elliott Ash and his team, the Latsis Symposium aimed at connecting civil society actors, online news platforms, policymakers, and scientists to evaluate novel pathways for tackling harmful online speech and strengthening public discourse. During the Zurich IP Retreat 2023, co-organized by Stefan Bechtold, judges, academics, and attorneys discussed a central topic of IP law: "The Measure of All Things".

Together with Laura Edelson (New York University) and Inge Graef (Tilburg University), postdoc Filippo Lancieri from the CLE launched the CERRE Report Access to Data and Algorithms: For an Effective DMA and DSA Implementation in April. The report takes stock of the 54 algorithmic transparency and data sharing obligations that are present in the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA), adopted by EU policy makers in 2022. The report further identifies what principles should guide the balancing of potential conflicts between data access and privacy, IP rights, and rule of law.

We are excited to present the new episodes of our CLE Vlog & Podcast Series:

Vlog with Jonathan Mayer (Princeton) on Adapting Security Warnings to Counter Online Disinformation
Disinformation is proliferating on the internet, and platforms are responding by attaching warnings to content. There is little evidence, however, that these warnings help users identify or avoid disinformation. In this episode, Prof. Jonathan Mayer (Princeton) discusses the study Adapting Security Warnings to Counter Online Disinformation with Amit Zac (ETH Zurich).
