Dear staff and students

I hope that this message finds you healthy and in good spirits as you start a new year. As Head of Department, it is a pleasure for me to address you all with this newsletter and send you my warmest greetings for 2024.

To begin this new year, let me extend a cordial welcome to a few new department members:

– First of all, Prof. Morteza Aramesh, who joined us as in January. He starts as Assistant Professor of Single Molecule and Single Cell Biophysics in Prof. Janos Vörös’ Laboratory of Biosensors and Bioelectronics.

– Dr. Ueli Koch, who started as educational developer and lecturer last autumn.

– Adrian Anner, who joined at the beginning of December as HR Partner. At the same time I would like to say farewell and thank you to Roland Munz who has served as interim HR partner in the last months.

– Last but not least, I would like to inform you about a change in the D-ITET management team: Prof. Christian Franck will take over as Director of Studies from Prof. Sebastian Kozerke beginning of February. To both faculty members I would like to express my sincere gratitude for taking on this important role.

Additionally, we are especially looking forward to another milestone in late spring – the official opening ceremony of the GLC building on 6 and 7 June. Please save the date in your calendar! Further details will follow.

With a new year ahead, let us seize the opportunities it offers with enthusiasm and determination. I encourage each and every one of you to continue to push boundaries, explore new ideas and collaborate across disciplines. Together, we can make a lasting impact on society and shape the future of our department.

All the best for 2024!

Best regards,

Prof. Jürg Leuthold
Head of Department

Improved ski jumping performance thanks to multi-sensor feedback

A team of students from the Integrated Systems Laboratory (IIS) and the Center for Project-Based Learning D-ITET is working on a cutting-edge project to improve the performance and training of ski jumpers. The cross-federation effort involves the development and testing of a multi-sensor feedback system that can measure and analyse various aspects of a ski jump, such as the centre of gravity during the inrun, the trajectory and the edge angle.

Green electricity

Three strategies to boost green electricity in Switzerland

Climate neutrality and nuclear phase-out: Switzerland's ambitious green electricity targets are realistic if the electricity supply is profoundly and rapidly transformed, as a study by the SWEET EDGE consortium shows. The researchers, one of whom is Prof. Gabriela Hug, developed three strategies for expanding renewable energies.

Simplified admission to the teaching diploma studies in physics

Students and alumnae of D‑ITET can now enter the study programme for the teaching diploma for Matura schools in physics without further requirements. In case of studies with a focus on electrical engineering or physics, no additional courses must be attended for the admission.

Mosaic

Mosaic: a novel neuromorphic artificial neural network circuit architecture

Filippo Moro, Yigit Demirag, Giacomo Indiveri, and Melika Payvand from the Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI) introduced a new hardware Architecture called the Mosaic. It is inspired by the small-world connectivity of the brain, with significant power reduction for routing information on Neuromorphic systems. Their study was recently published in the journal "Nature Communications".

Watching electrons at work

Researchers from ETH Zurich, Empa, and Stanford, including Prof. Vanessa Wood, have taken snapshots of the crystal structure of perovskite nanocrystals as it was deformed by excited electrons. To their surprise, the deformation straightened out the skewed crystal structure rather than making it more disordered.

CES Las Vegas

Silver medal for autonomous racing team ForzaETH at CES in Las Vegas

Members and undergraduate students of the Center for Project-Based Learning D-ITET (PBL) secured a prestigious second place in the Indy autonomous race simulation at the tech event CES in Las Vegas. ETH’s team was only surpassed by the experienced PoliMove team from Politecnico di Milano. Congratulations!
