HEST.PULSE (03/2023)
Dear members of D-HEST

In this edition of HEST.PULSE – the last of 2023 - I am pleased to introduce to you the new department management, our directors of study as well as the new members of the D-HEST faculty and staff. You may also read the most recent news on the Golden Owl Award for excellent teaching, and on doctoral students who were awarded the ETH silver medal for their outstanding theses. Finally, in the section "Looking back”, there is a summary of my D-HEST highlights of the past two years.

Approaching the end of my term as Head of Department at the end of January 2024, I would like to thank you all for your support during my two-year term, and I wish the newly elected department management all the best for the two years ahead. The past two years have not necessarily been “business as usual” with the major changes in the restructuring of the department administration and financial challenges, but I hope and believe that this has mostly gone almost unnoticed by most of the staff in the department, who have been able to focus on their research and teaching – the tasks that most of us enjoy the most.

It has been an honor to serve the entire D-HEST community as Head of Department. I wish you and you beloved ones all a joyous and relaxing holiday break and all the best for the new year!

Sincerely,
Laura Nyström, Head of Department

The Head of Department, Laura Nyström, chatting with the Deputy Head of Department and future Head of Department, Bill Taylor, at the D-HEST Research Day on 7 September 2023

Laura Nyström's two-year term as Head of Department will end on January 31st, 2024. We look back with her on some of the D-HEST highlights of her term:
 TEACHING
The «Food Science Forward» degree programme initiative was launched in July 2021 with the aim of analysing and comprehensively revising the Food Science degree programme. The time has now come: from autumn semester 2024, new regulations will apply to both the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, and the course has been given a new name: Food Science and Nutrition, or Lebensmittelwissenschaften und Ernährung. Many thanks to all those who have made the revision of the degree programme possible - especially to the Director of Studies Prof. Michael Siegrist and the study coordinator Dr Jeannette Nuessli Guth!

 FINALLY: MOVING INTO GLC
After a long delay, some of our groups were finally able to move into the new GLC building! While construction work is still going on in some of the labs below ground, the groups who are fully operational enjoy the new building immensely. They are pleased to work together under the same roof and in walking distance from each other. The building is a great chance for D-HEST to confirm and expand its position in health sciences and in medicine.

 RESEARCH DAY
With the move to the GLC building, we took the opportunity and occupied the building with the first D-HEST Research Day after the pandemic. The event took place on September 7th and was enjoyed by everyone who attended. It was a great event and definitely a highlight of this year! Information and photos are available on the D-HEST website.

 EXTERNAL EVALUATION
Department evaluations are held by order of the ETH Executive Board. After 2016, our young department (founded in 2012) was evaluated for the second time this year. As I wrote in the April 2023 issue of HEST.PULSE, it called for a strenuous effort for many of us, and we were all pleased about how it went. I would like to thank once again everyone who contributed to presenting our department in a concise way, both in the self-evaluation report we produced as well as during the visit of the reviewers in March. The next external evaluation is planned to take place in 8 years from now.

 FACULTY
In 2022 and 2023, four new D-HEST faculty members have been appointed: Katharina Gapp, Alexander Harms, Nina Cabezas Wallscheid (who will join us in 2024) and, most recently, Xiao-Hua Qin. In addition, five Professors were promoted to Full or Associate Professor, and two were awarded the title Adjunct Professor: Information about appointments at D-HEST. One of our Professors, Christian Wolfrum, was appointed as Vice President for Research and became a member of the ETH Executive Board.
The following Professors have left the faculty of D-HEST in the past two years: Michael B. Zimmermann and most recently Christophe Lacroix retired, Collin Ewald's term as Assistant Professor ended, and Michael Ristow took a new position at Charité Berlin.

 DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATION
The administrative office of the department has gone through a major restructuring and organization revision in the past two years. The departure of our long-term Department Coordinator Giovanni Salemme initiated a cascade of changes and modifications in the Department's personnel, and I am particularly happy with how his successor Dr. Tobias Walser has shaped the Staff of the department. I am confident that when all the changes have been implemented, we will have a smoothly functioning administrative framework that is up to date with the size of our department, and will allow us to focus on the tasks that many of us in the end enjoy the most (teaching and research).
