A good start into the spring semester
Dear readers,

The spring semester has started, the days are becoming longer, and our department has many things to celebrate. The 119 students who have completed their Master’s thesis in the last ten months have been invited to the Master's Graduation Ceremony on Friday 24 March where they received their degree. We congratulate each of them and wish them a lot of success in their future studies and endeavours.

Our professors have been successful in the past month as well, especially Dr Barbara Solenthaler, who has been promoted to Adjunct Professor, and Professor Ce Zhang, who has been promoted to Associate Professor of Computer Science.

Since 2016, our department is a partner of the Informatiktage (Computer Science Days). There will be workshops and lectures throughout this week, and an Open Day at the CAB building on Saturday 1 April, where everybody will get a chance to learn something new about computer science. We invite you to spread the word about this event and to join us with your family and friends on Saturday.

Please enjoy this edition of READ.ME. I wish you all a very good spring.

Best regards,

Kenny Paterson
Department Head

Please meet...
Tamara Gini, Master's student

What is your major and why did you choose it?
I chose Visual and Interactive Computing because courses in this field were the most interesting to me during my Bachelor’s. I like visualising the results rather than only getting some abstract feedback so that it becomes clear at a first glance whether you made a mistake.

Which skill are you learning or improving these days?
I recently joined a local badminton club. The average skill level is quite high, so I’m often surrounded by people that are very good at what they do (similar to ETH). This motivates me to step up my game and keep improving a bit every week.

Who is your role model and why?
I don’t have one specific role model, but I’m generally drawn toward women in tech who don’t care about stereotypes and have inspiring careers. Representation matters, be it through a fair percentage of women in leadership roles or even through women engineers at a job fair.

Do you have any tips for future Master's students at D-INFK?
I would suggest listening to your gut feeling about which field is the most exciting and appealing to you. With that extra bit of motivation, it becomes much easier to do all the projects (and exercises) that are required in the Master’s courses. Physical activities like Superkondi also helps a lot with general well-being and a good work-life balance. This should in no case be neglected.
