Much to celebrate
Dear readers,

As we head into the last month of 2022, we are once again celebrating a number of awards our faculty and students have received for their excellent teaching, research and entrepreneurship. Special congratulations go to Ghislain Fourny for receiving the Credit Suisse Award for Best Teaching, the first time that a D-INFK member has won this award since its introduction in 2006.

Just in time for us to celebrate these achievements, the annual “Glühwein-Apéro” returns from its pandemic hiatus on December 20. Stop by CAB to have some mulled wine or a non-alcoholic punch and ring in the holiday season with staff, students and faculty. And if you want to learn more about the research our faculty members are doing, have a look at the recordings of their inaugural lectures, linked below.

Last but not least, we welcome our newest faculty member, Ralf Jung, as well as eight excellent Master’s students who have received an ESOP scholarship. We look forward to working with you!

Please enjoy this edition of READ.ME.

Best regards,

Timothy Roscoe

Please meet...
Malte Schwerhoff, lecturer and educational developer

What do you find most challenging about your role?
As a lecturer: finding the right compromises when designing courses: e.g. weighing the needs of different audiences vs. expectations towards computer science lectures. Or combining time-efficient frontal teaching with interactively solving a problem and discussing possible solutions.

What fascinates you about computer science?
Infinite worlds at my fingertips, explorable and shapable with just a small box and a curious mind. From gaming to programming to mathematically rigorous reasoning – different adventures everywhere.

Which skill are you learning or improving these days?
Probably networking, due to recently assuming the position of D-INFK's educational developer.

How do you spend your leisure time?
AT ASVZ (so many offers), reading (mostly fantasy & sci-fi), hiking (took a while, but is growing on me), travelling (still much to see out there). And programming (creating things still feels great).
