New year, new beginnings
Dear readers,

I am delighted to welcome you into this new year, hopefully well-rested and with renewed vigour. My start of the year was quite eventful with taking over the role of Department Head from my predecessor Timothy Roscoe. He has done a fantastic job during an intense term with the department evaluation and the pandemic. This role comes with great responsibility, and I am grateful that I was able to learn from him. I am looking forward to the next two years working alongside Thomas Hofmann as Associate Department Head and all of you.

We have already received some exciting news this year: Torsten Hoefler, Marc Pollefeys and Zhendong Su have all been named ACM Fellows. Many congratulations! Out of 57 new Fellows, three are from our department. This is the first time in six years so many of our faculty members were honoured simultaneously.

Last but not least, this week the session examinations have started. Good luck to all our students in the exams!

Explore further news and events at D-INFK in this edition of READ.ME. Enjoy!

Best regards,

Kenny Paterson
Department Head

Please meet...
Sandra Kübler, Restaurant Manager food&lab CAB

In one sentence, what do you do?
I am responsible for ensuring that the food&lab runs smoothly and that our guests feel welcome here: this includes personnel planning, purchasing, finances and even front cooking.

What is your favourite dish at the food&lab?
There are many! An absolute classic for me is the pasta "Cinque Pi", but I also really like the burger that we offer once a week.

Which skill are you learning or improving these days?
I practice patience a lot – both at home with my 2-year-old daughter and at food&lab when something does not go as quickly as I would like.

What is the most important lesson you have learned in your career so far?
Being flexible and knowing how to help yourself. In our industry, there are always unforeseen situations where you have to react quickly and find solutions.

How do you spend your leisure time?
I spend my free time with my family. I have also been an active member of the Islikon-Kefikon Music Association for around 20 years, where I play the euphonium.
