Header Discover D-ITET

Dear all at D-ITET,

With the end of 2021 slowly approaching, I would like to look back and briefly reflect on this year's challenges and achievements.

Once again, this year has been shaped by the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. I am pleased to say that ETH and D-ITET have remained rather safe places with a relatively low rate of reported Covid-19 cases so far, even after teaching was allowed to take place on-site again. This has been made possible due to the discipline of all of you – thank you for this effort! The future course of the pandemic still looks uncertain, but I trust that discipline and solidarity will help to get us through what will hopefully be the last phase of the pandemic.

In this edition of DISCOVER D-ITET, I would like to inform you that one of the most important projects this year, the department evaluation, was completed successfully beginning of November. In this week-long evaluation, which takes place only every six years, D-ITET was reviewed by an international panel of experts. In a series of presentations and discussions (all conducted online), teaching and research at our department was reviewed by an international panel of scientists. I am very pleased to say that the reviewers' report has been extremely positive and confirmed that D-ITET is an outstanding place for academic studies and research. Finally, I would like to highlight that members from all groups at D-ITET made enormous contributions to both preparing and conducting the evaluation – thank you!

Furthermore, I am delighted to welcome two new faculty members who have recently joined D-ITET (or will do so in the near future): Prof. Hua Wang joined us in 2021 from Georgia Tech, and Prof. Lana Josipović, presently at EPFL, will start at the beginning of 2022. Please join me in welcoming them very warmly here at D-ITET!

2021 has been a challenging but also successful year. I would like to thank all of you for your hard work and your countless contributions to teaching, research, services and administration at D-ITET.

With my very best wishes for the festive season and a happy new year,
Klaas Enno Stephan
Head of Department
