NADEL Newsletter July 2019
nadelNEWS (Header)
Dear NADEL alumni and friends of NADEL,

Linking scientists and practitioners for more effective development policies is one of NADEL’s major objectives. To achieve this, the NADEL team has been engaged in many activities over the last five years, including conferences, workshops, coaching and scientific studies, as well as higher education for graduates of all disciplines and trainings for professionals from development organizations. With the launch of the ETH for Development (ETH4D) initiative in March 2019, another crucial step has been made. ETH4D is an ETH-wide initiative that aims to innovate and test solutions for global societal challenges and to educate future leaders in sustainable development. NGOs, policymakers, international organizations and industry are invited to collaborate with researchers across ETH. Please join us for the launching event with many ideas on the 18th of September 2019. Until then: have a great summer!

All the best,
Fritz Brugger and Isabel Günther

Until the end of 2019, the students will complete 8-10 months of on-the-job training. They will return in February for their final study semester.
Launch of ETH for Development (ETH4D)
ETH4D is a new ETH-wide initiative that develops solutions for global challenges people face and educates future leaders in sustainable development. ETH4D is driven by over 20 ETH research groups as well as NADEL Center for Development and Cooperation, ETH Global, ETH Sustainability, and the ETH Student Project House - and will support many activities over the next five years, such as research collaborations with practice, exchange programs for students and professors to and from Africa, new teaching programmes, as well as a new professorship in development engineering. To stay informed you can sign up for the ETH4D newsletter here. To attend the ETH4D launching event on September 18th 2019 you can sign up here.
ETH4D has just initiated the ETH4D research challenges, a call for proposals for collaborations between researchers and practice (NGOs, industry, governments, multi-laterals) that aim to address international development challenges.
Village Life – Improve your livelihood with limited resources and unlimited uncertainty
Village Life is a simulation game where participants have to take on the roles of poor farmers aiming to improve the livelihoods of their families. The simulation has been played and further developed over the last eight years at NADEL. It provides students with a great introduction to many of the daily decisions that poor farmers face and to reflect on possible development interventions. The game is now publicly available here. It is ideally played with 14-24 participants and takes one full day to complete. Please try it out and let us know if you have any questions. We are happy to help!
