What are adequate indicators of sanitation quality?
While shared sanitation facilities are often the only viable option in densely populated low-income urban areas, it is currently considered a "limited" solution by the international community. In a recently published paper, Dario Meili from the ETH Development Economics Group, together with partners in Kenya, Ghana, Bangladesh, and from the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology EAWAG, reconsiders the WHO/UNICEF classification for towns and cities. The authors show that the technology of a toilet is more important for sanitation quality than whether it is shared or not. Moreover, toilets shared by two to three households can still be of good quality and could serve as an alternative indicator. Extending the classification scheme for the case of urban sanitation could help to make better use of scarce resources in the future.

Past and future of Project Cycle Management
Many practitioners find standard project cycle management (PCM) instruments, and particularly the logframe, to be donor-driven, bureaucratic and static. Development organizations have increasingly searched for alternatives. In a policy brief, NADEL’s Kimon Schneider questions this trend, arguing that the crux of good PCM lies in how the instruments are used, rather than the instruments themselves. The focus should not be on further multiplying instruments, but investing more in transferable skills of practitioners such as thinking in an interdisciplinary way and acting adaptively, enabling them to use any instruments in a given context.

Impact of public lighting in informal cities
Congrats to Yael Borofsky for her doctoral defence and her important research on the impact of public lighting on quality of life at night in informal settlements. The irony is that the topic of public lighting and life at night in informal cities has been neglected by scientists because the absence of lighting has led to security concerns. Yael and partners at ETH Zurich’s Institute of Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP) have improved our understanding of what lack of lighting means for the one billion people worldwide living in informal cities, and what can be done about it. As part of the research, Yael, along with more than 2000 residents, installed wall-mounted solar lights in one urban area, providing evidence on how light changes the quality of life for residents of informal settlements.
