Dear reader,
We are thrilled that the new Mechatronics MA Programme jointly offered by ETH Zurich and Ashesi University started in Ghana last month. We wish the 26 students a great start to their first semester!
We are also happy to announce the six new research projects from ETH and EPFL with the International Committee of the Red Cross that aim to strengthen humanitarian action. Topics range from using computer vision techniques to identify human remains to the use of satellite imagery to monitor armed conflicts.
The popular exhibition about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be shown at ETH Hönggerberg as part of the Nachhaltigkeitswoche Zürich, which includes a number of inspiring events featuring students’ engagement for the SDGs. We hope to see you there!
We wish everyone a great start of the year and most importantly good health.
Warm regards, Adina Rom For the ETH4D Team |

Solar Public Lights: An Alternative Solution for Informal Settlements |
A recent project by ETH researchers, together with partners from South Africa, has examined the impact of improved public lighting on the life of residents of informal settlements in Cape Town. Wall-mounted solar public lights could prove to be an effective and sustainable alternative to the high-mast lighting currently in use. The project was partly funded through an ETH4D Research Challenge grant. |
