Dear reader,
While ETH is slowly moving back to "normal", the world is still in turmoil. Low-income countries are hit particularly hard by the global pandemic with still increasing cases in many places, exerting a high burden on health systems. In addition, the pandemic is expected to adversely affect the education of millions of children and lead to the first recession in Africa after 25 years of economic growth. You can read in the Innovation section how ETH4D researchers are making a difference by developing innovations for low-income communities. #BlackLivesMatter: At the same time, the brutal killing of the African-American George Floyd sparked global protest and important discussions around racism and discrimination. In the Community section, you can read more about the actions taken by the international scientific community. At ETH4D we are committed to listen and learn about systemic racism, exclusion and discrimination and take action to promote equity and inclusion at ETH4D and beyond. Finally, we are excited to share the latest news and thoughts from our network with you and to announce the third call for ETH4D Research Challenges. Stay healthy and all the best, The ETH for Development (ETH4D) team

Creating a low-cost ventilator for all |
Prof. Kristina Shea has assembled a team of engineers, an industrial designer and medical advisors who are designing, prototyping and testing a low-cost ventilator to meet the unique needs of low- and middle-income countries. They are getting a head start on a next-generation ventilator that builds on current developments to create a use-case and user-driven product. When finished, they will make their design open-source and available to all.

Researchers and NGOs discuss COVID-19-related innovations |
Several ETH research groups are currently developing medical equipment that could also benefit low- and middle-income countries in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Since collaboration between academia and practitioners is essential to achieve this goal, researchers and representatives of Swiss NGOs discussed how their research can contribute to addressing COVID-19 challenges around the world.

Give equipment a second life! |
Enable Education Everywhere! To strengthen education and research in the world, EquipSent provides lower-income countries with fully functional scientific equipment that has been early disposed in high-income countries. Anyone interested in promoting the sustainable re-use of equipment for the greater good can support the non-profit organization by sponsoring a transfer, the donation of used devices or with helping hands. EquipSent was founded by former ETH students and its team has quickly grown. Follow their journey on social media and get more information on their sustainable transfers here.

#ShutDownSTEM and #BlackLivesMatter |
#ShutDownSTEM: The brutal killing of the African-American George Floyd by a white police officer sparked protests and important discussions and actions around the world. On June 10th there was a global strike of the scientific community with the goal of eliminating racism in academia that was joined by scientists, journals and research institutions around the world; among others by the magazine Nature and the American Association of the Advancement of Science. At ETH, the Academic Association of Scientific Staff (AVETH) and the African Student Association (ASAZ) called to action on Twitter. In this interview, ETH President Joël Mesot and Renate Schubert, the Executive Board's Delegate for Equal Opportunities, discuss how the current debate affects ETH. Unfortunately, racism and discrimination remain also a reality in Switzerland and in international development research and practice. At ETH4D we are committed to listen and learn about systemic racism, exclusion and discrimination, to take action to fight it and to promote equity and inclusion at ETH4D and beyond.
