Header World
Dear reader,

While ETH is slowly moving back to "normal", the world is still in turmoil. Low-income countries are hit particularly hard by the global pandemic with still increasing cases in many places, exerting a high burden on health systems. In addition, the pandemic is expected to adversely affect the education of millions of children and lead to the first recession in Africa after 25 years of economic growth. You can read in the Innovation section how ETH4D researchers are making a difference by developing innovations for low-income communities.

#BlackLivesMatter: At the same time, the brutal killing of the African-American George Floyd sparked global protest and important discussions around racism and discrimination. In the Community section, you can read more about the actions taken by the international scientific community. At ETH4D we are committed to listen and learn about systemic racism, exclusion and discrimination and take action to promote equity and inclusion at ETH4D and beyond.

Finally, we are excited to share the latest news and thoughts from our network with you and to announce the third call for ETH4D Research Challenges.

Stay healthy and all the best,

The ETH for Development (ETH4D) team

Low-cost ventilator
Creating a low-cost ventilator for all
Prof. Kristina Shea has assembled a team of engineers, an industrial designer and medical advisors who are designing, prototyping and testing a low-cost ventilator to meet the unique needs of low- and middle-income countries. They are getting a head start on a next-generation ventilator that builds on current developments to create a use-case and user-driven product. When finished, they will make their design open-source and available to all.
A global tool against deforestation
In the pursuit of a positive CO2 balance, companies are striving to procure raw materials from sustainable sources. Yet, how can food companies ensure that deforestation in the areas of cultivation is avoided? ETH researchers are developing a global tool that everyone can use. Dr. Jan Dirk Wegner and Nico Lang from the EcoVision Lab are talking about their research project, sustainable supply chains and satellites.

Researchers and NGOs discuss COVID-19-related innovations
Several ETH research groups are currently developing medical equipment that could also benefit low- and middle-income countries in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Since collaboration between academia and practitioners is essential to achieve this goal, researchers and representatives of Swiss NGOs discussed how their research can contribute to addressing COVID-19 challenges around the world.
Learning
Bridging Art and Science Course
We are very happy that the interdisciplinary course "Bridging Art and Science" can take place in person. The course aims to deepen students' knowledge about global challenges and to inspire them to reflect critically upon complex topics of sustainable development and the role of media reporting about such issues. In each class, students will watch a documentary which explores critical areas of the 2030 Agenda: Planet, People, Prosperity, Peace and Partnerships. Each film will be discussed with an expert from academia and/or a practitioner from the field of development cooperation. Registrations in the Course Catalogue will open at the end of July.

Meet the Research Challenge Grantees
We are excited to announce the second round grant recipients of the ETH4D Research Challenges, which aim to address challenges faced by low-income communities with transdisciplinary research. The first study (Sara Marks) aims to improve the access to safe drinking water. It evaluates the applicability of a locally produced chlorination device. The second study (Yael Borofsky, Stephanie Briers, Isabel Günther) is analyzing the impact of a new public lighting technology — solar lights mounted onto residents’ houses — on people’s lives in poor urban neighborhoods, which are often left in the dark by policy-making.

Open call for Research Challenges Autumn 2020
The third call for ETH4D Research Challenges is now open! The goal of these project-based collaborations between ETH scientists, the private sector, NGOs, governmental organisations and partners from around the world is to develop innovative and effective solutions for poverty reduction. Application deadline: 30 September 2020.

NADEL podcast
1.90 per day - listen to the new NADEL podcast!
NADEL - Center for Development and Cooperation is launching a new podcast series: 1.90 per day. Rethinking international cooperation, they ask ETH alumni how they contribute to sustainable development in their work, how they fight extreme poverty and inequalities or promote responsible consumption and production.
Give equipment a second life!
Enable Education Everywhere! To strengthen education and research in the world, EquipSent provides lower-income countries with fully functional scientific equipment that has been early disposed in high-income countries. Anyone interested in promoting the sustainable re-use of equipment for the greater good can support the non-profit organization by sponsoring a transfer, the donation of used devices or with helping hands. EquipSent was founded by former ETH students and its team has quickly grown. Follow their journey on social media and get more information on their sustainable transfers here.
#ShutDownSTEM and #BlackLivesMatter
#ShutDownSTEM: The brutal killing of the African-American George Floyd by a white police officer sparked protests and important discussions and actions around the world. On June 10th there was a global strike of the scientific community with the goal of eliminating racism in academia that was joined by scientists, journals and research institutions around the world; among others by the magazine Nature and the American Association of the Advancement of Science. At ETH, the Academic Association of Scientific Staff (AVETH) and the African Student Association (ASAZ) called to action on Twitter. In this interview, ETH President Joël Mesot and Renate Schubert, the Executive Board's Delegate for Equal Opportunities, discuss how the current debate affects ETH. Unfortunately, racism and discrimination remain also a reality in Switzerland and in international development research and practice. At ETH4D we are committed to listen and learn about systemic racism, exclusion and discrimination, to take action to fight it and to promote equity and inclusion at ETH4D and beyond.

Congratulations!
We are proud to share that ETH4D advisory board member and founder of ETH spinoff Oxara Gnanli Landrou won the SEIF Social Innovation Award. Oxara is producing cement-free admixture technology that transforms waste into an environmentally friendly and cost-effective building material.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Jan Dirk Wegner, who was selected to join the World Economic Forum's Young Scientists Community. He combines remote sensing imagery with machine learning to address biodiversity, deforestation & sustainable supply chains.

We are also celebrating Prof. Rachael Garrett, who was elected to the Scientific Steering Committee of the Global Land Programme. The programme contributes to the implementation of research to advance sustainability transformations worldwide.

We would also like to congratulate the Chair of Innovative and Industrial Construction and Firehiwot Nesro Kedir as lead researcher on the publication of the report A Sustainable Transition to Industrialized Housing Construction in Developing Economies. The report highlights micro- and macro-level factors that contribute to the sustainable adoption of Industrialized Construction products and processes in developing economies.

If you or one of your team members has reached a great milestone in their work, let us know!
