We hope this newsletter finds you weIl despite the ongoing pandemic. We have some good news and opportunities to share with you!

We are very excited that the Joint Master's Programme in Mechatronic Engineering with Ashesi University is becoming reality and applications are now open. ETH will also conduct an autumn school with African and IDEA League partner universities on the Water, Energy, Food and Environment Nexus. Check out the Learning section for more information.

How can sustainable reforestation be done at a low-cost in Guinea? How to teach hands-on coding training to students in low-resources settings in Ghana? These and other questions will be addressed with the latest set of Research Challenges and the newly developed programme that supports students to develop their research into action. Read more about it in the Innovation section.

New ETH4D Research Challenges

Get to know the newest ETH4D Research Challenges:

The Group of Forest Management and Development is collaborating with the NGO arboRise to investigate low-cost sustainable reforestation with seedballs in Guinea.

The Sustainable Agroecosystems Group and Vivamos Mejor Guatemala are developing and evaluating an effective faeces biochar soil amendment for dry sanitation solutions.

Call for Proposals for the ETH4D Research Challenges are currently open!

New ETH4D Research to Action Projects

Students and young researchers from ETH Zurich are putting their research into practice! Projects include innovation platform meetings and transdisciplinary stakeholder workshop for dynamic agroforestry systems for sustainable cocoa cultivation in Ghana, testing a prototype of a portable solar-cart in India, and developing a model for industry partnerships for an initiative that aims to provide education everywhere by giving research equipment a second life. We congratulate the grantees!

Ashesi-ETH Master in Mechatronic Engineering: Applications are Open!

We are excited to announce that applications are now open for our Master’s programme in Mechatronic Engineering! Starting in January 2022, the programme is offered by Ashesi University and ETH Zurich, and taught at Ashesi in Ghana by faculty of both institutions.

Apply now! European-African Autumn School "Water, Energy, Food and Environment Nexus"

The collaborative online Autumn School between five African universities and five European IDEA League universities offers students an understanding of the interconnections, synergies, and trade-offs between water, energy, and food in different environmental contexts. A focus is placed on practical solutions and case studies that foster interdisciplinary collaboration. Between 21 October - 12 November 2021. Master's and PhD students from partnering universities are welcome to apply.

ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Programme

As a professor, senior scientist or post doc at ETH Zurich you can support doctoral students in low- and lower-middle-income countries through remote mentoring and invite them to ETH Zurich for a research stay of 1-3 months. Apply by 30 September 2021!

Save the Date: Scientifica 4-5 September

ETH4D and the World Food System Center are joining forces at this year's Scientifica. Visit our joint exhibit "Innovation for Sustainable Development", where you can test an app that keeps fruit and vegetables in your refrigerator fresh, find out how drinking water is treated with low-cost technologies and create a circular economy using a 3D model. The programme will be available on the Scientifica website from the end of July.

ETH4D at Industry Day on 8 September

We also look forward to seeing you at our exhibit at Industry Day on September 8, 2021. This year we focus on health technologies. The project breathe will present a low-cost, holistically designed ventilator that meets the unique needs of low-income countries. The ETH start-up diaxxo will show “peakPCR”, a fast and portable PCR testing device that can test for illnesses such as malaria and COVID-19. See here for the programme. Registrations are open.
