The Student Sustainability Commission is bringing COP27 to ETH Zurich - with two weeks of events to learn, reflect, and engage about climate change. Within this, we will discuss what is at stake for global development - join our session on 15 November.

We are also excited to announce that the call for proposals of the Humanitarian Action Challenges is now open. ETH & EPFL researchers interested in conducting a collaborative research project with the International Committee of the Red Cross are invited to apply.

Over the course of two days, the aha science festival will shed light on questions about money. On Friday, ETH Doctoral Candidate Dario Meili will discuss if inequality is increasing or decreasing. On Saturday, ETH4D Executive Director Adina Rom will talk about why it makes sense to give money to people living in poverty. The talks are in German.

Call for Research Proposals: Humanitarian Action Challenges
Researchers at ETH Zurich and EPFL can now apply to conduct collaborative research with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to develop effective solutions for humanitarian action, as part of the Engineering for Humanitarian Action Initiative.

Entrepreneur selling water filters
Sustainable Clean Drinking Water Solution
ETH Postdoc Olivier Gröninger and his team at Openversum are working with entrepreneurs in South America to improve the drinking water supply for people in rural areas. During his doctoral research, Olivier developed an inexpensive and easy-to-use water filter. Openversum now trains entrepreneurs in Colombia and Ecuador to manufacture, sell, and maintain these filters – an approach that helps to secure the sustainable supply of clean water while creating income opportunities.

Global Development Summer School 2022
This year’s Global Development Summer School - a collaboration between ETH for Development (ETH4D) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana - dealt with sustainable solid waste management. From August 31st to September 16th, a total of 48 students from ETH Zurich and KNUST immersed themselves in the topic of waste and worked together to identify feasible solutions that tackle global waste management challenges.

As a researcher at ETH Zurich you can collaborate with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on project-based research to develop solutions for humanitarian action. Apply until 18 January (17:00 CET).

Grant sum: 50k - 300k CHF
ETH4D Doctoral Mentorship Programme
Support doctoral candidates in low- and lower-middle-income countries with remote mentoring and a research stay at ETH Zurich of up to 3 months. Applications are open until 31 December.

Grant sum: up to 15k CHF
ETH4D Research to Action Grant
Receive support as a student, senior scientist or post-doc at ETH to discuss your work with practitioners or to develop prototypes to ensure that research results are being used, implemented and disseminated. Applications are open until 31 December.
