We kick off the second year of ETH4D with many new opportunities! Apply and read further about our grants and scholarship programmes in the corresponding section. As part of our Learning initiative, ETH4D is offering four new courses on global sustainable development topics this semester. These include a Doctoral Colloquium on Research for Development and a Summer School in Ghana on solid waste management. Other exciting Events can be found in the corresponding section, where we hope to see many of you.

Courses
Register for ETH4D courses this spring semester
This spring semester, ETH4D is offering four courses where students can gain insight in topics relevant for global sustainable development and participate actively to contribute to sustainable development through their studies, research and as members of society.
MAS
Apply for Master of Advanced Studies in Development and Cooperation
The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Development and Cooperation is a two-year programme offered by NADEL – Center for Development and Cooperation for people wishing to pursue a career in international development. Within an inspiring environment students will be able to acquire an understanding of local and global development challenges as well as the tools and methods to find innovative solutions to address them. Application deadline: 29 February 2020.
Ghana visit
ETH4D visits Ghana to strengthen partnerships
Earlier this year, ETH4D visited Ghana to strengthen institutional partnerships with Ashesi University in Accra and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi. Read further here.
Wolrd Economic Forum
ETH4D at World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2020
On 23 January 2020 Adina Rom participated in the Swiss-African Business Roundtable, which took the place during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2020 in Davos. Through inspiring insights by Patrick Njoroge, Governor of Central Bank of Kenya, the roundtable aimed to connect Swiss & African businesses and increase the visibility of Africa and its enterprises at the World Economic Forum.
Innovation
Open call for Research Challenges
The call for proposals for the second round of the ETH4D Research Challenges is still open! The goal of these project-based collaborations between ETH researchers, non-​academic partners (i.e. Private Sector, NGOs, Governmental Organisations) and partners from the Global South is to develop effective solutions for poverty reduction.
Application deadline: 28 February 2020.
Call for proposals at SDC
The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is looking for promising research and innovation initiatives. SDC’s Analysis and Policy Division has just launched TRANSFORM, a new instrument to promote research and innovation for sustainable development. More information about the application process can be found here.
Deadline for submission of pre-proposals: 5 April 2020.

Opportunities
Open call for ETH4D grants
Apply for the following grant schemes and scholarships before 30 April 2020.

E4D Doctoral Scholarship Programme promotes doctoral research that is directly relevant for improving the lives of people living in poverty.

E4D Continuing Education Scholarship Programme aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of future leaders from low- and middle-income countries.
Visiting Scientist Grants encourage ETH scientists to bring senior scientists from low- and middle-income countries to ETH Zurich for a research stay or a workshop/conference attendance.

Teaching Stay Grants fund ETH scientists to travel to partner institutions for lectures, courses and collaboration meetings.
Visiting Student Grants support doctoral or master students from low- and middle-income countries to visit an ETH Zurich research group for 2-3 months.

Education and Decent Work for Youth
4 - 5 June 2020

In the framework of the r4d project LELAM-TVET4INCOME, ETH4D member groups the Swiss Economic Institute KOF and NADEL - Center for Development and Cooperation are organising an international conference on improving education and the working conditions for youth in low income countries. Papers can be submitted until 1 March 2020. Registration for participants is open until 13 April 2020. More information

ETH Sustainability Summer School

In collaboration with ETH Sustainability and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), ETH4D is organising a summer school in Ghana on the topic of solid waste. Registration for participants is open until 16 March 2020.

The IARU Summer School "Borderland: Critical Approaches to Field Research in the Global South"
29 June - 21 July 2020
Chiang Mai, Thailand
The course offered by UC Berkeley and University of Copenhagen in collaboration with Chiang Mai University combines research, education and a NGO placement experience. Advanced Bachelor and Master students from the IARU network (including ETH Zurich) are invited to apply until 1 March 2020.
