Dear reader,
We would like to dedicate this newsletter to everyone who is working towards a more just, peaceful, and inclusive world, be it through research, teaching, policy implementation, humanitarian work or any other actions.
There are many ways to make a difference: You can attend our Career Lunch and learn about career paths in global development and sustainability. With a Research to Action Grant we support you to turn your research into real-world impact. As a professor at ETH you can mentor a doctoral student in a low-income country. Students are invited to join our summer school and develop solutions for sustainable waste management together with colleagues from Ghana.
ETH4D team member Patricia Heuberger serves in the ETH Support Group Ukraine and helped 12 Ukrainian scholars to get a position at ETH through the Scholars at Risk Grant. You can read more about her experience below. In the next newsletter, we would like to portray another ETH4D community member who contributes to a more just and inclusive world. Please let us know who you would like to nominate.
Warm wishes, Patricia and Adina For the ETH4D Team |

ETH Researchers Turn Research Into Action |
For research and innovation at ETH to have a real impact, it must go beyond the boundaries of the university and be made accessible to practitioners and policy makers. ETH4D is supporting "Research-to-Action" projects, ranging from a user study for a low-cost ventilator in South Africa, to an app to increase the reuse of building materials in India, to trainings for WASH stakeholders in Ethiopia on the use and dissemination of a decision support tool for sustainable sanitation options. |

Drone Imagery From the Vantage Point of Zambian Stakeholders |
With the support of the ETH4D Research to Action Grant, researchers from the ETH Ecosystem Management Group and the University of Zambia's Integrated Water Resources Management Centre have organised stakeholder meetings to discuss drone imagery from Zambian landscapes with farmers, administrators, companies and environmental NGOs. The images were initially collected to better understand water quality issues related to agricultural intensification and hydropower dams. |

Better Control of Development Aid Through AI |
Malte Toetzke and Nicolas Banholzer, doctoral students at the MTEC Department of ETH Zurich, are working together with Professor Stefan Feuerriegel, who recently moved from ETH Zurich to LMU Munich, to provide more clarity about global development aid with a new method of analysis. The researchers use artificial intelligence (AI) to sort money flows into thematic groups. This makes it possible to see how funding is distributed across thematic areas, countries and years, and where action may be required. |
