Dear reader
As the year 2021 is ending, I would like to thank the members of D-HEST for all of your support during my two years as Head of Department. The appearance of the virus has made things challenging for everybody, and I cannot thank you enough for your continued efforts to get through this pandemic.
At the bottom of this 3rd edition of HEST.PULSE, in the section "Looking back”, there is a brief summary of what went on in D-HEST during my two-year term as Head of Department. But first, let me introduce the new department management, a new member of the D-HEST staff, and a new member of the D-HEST faculty. You also have the chance to learn more about the life and work of Prof. em. Erich Windhab.
It has been an honor to serve as Head of Department. I wish you all a joyous and relaxing holiday break and all the best for the new year!

An der Departementskonferenz vom 9. Dezember 2021 wurde die neue Departementsleitung gewählt, die ab 1. Februar 2022 während zweier Jahre im Amt bleiben wird*. | Laura Nyström, currently Deputy Head of Department, joined ETH Zurich as Assistant Professor of Food Biochemistry (tenure track) in 2009, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016. During the department conference in which Laura was elected as Head of Department, ETH Zurich announced that she had been promoted to Full Professor. Congratulations!

| Michael Siegrist has been Professor of Consumer Behavior at ETH Zurich since April 2007. He succeeds Prof. Shana J. Sturla as Director of Studies in the Food Science study program. One of his major tasks in this role will be to bring the revision of the study program forward - "Food Science Forward". See HEST.PULSE 02/2021. |

|
| Christian Wolfrum came to ETH Zurich and in 2008 was appointed Assistant Professor for Obesity Research. He was promoted to Full Professor in January 2017. Christian has been Director of Studies for the study program Health Sciences and Technology ever since it started in 2011. He has also been Director of Studies for the Human Medicine study program from the start in 2017. |

All employees and doctoral students may contact the trusted intermediary directly when there are issues with their supervisors or other colleagues that cannot be solved.

Der ETH-Rat hat an seiner Sitzung vom 8./9. Dezember 2021 Dr. Catherline Jutzeler zur Tenure-Track-Assistenzprofessorin für Biomedizinische Datenwissenschaften am D-HEST ernannt. Sie ist zur Zeit Gruppenleiterin an der ETH Zürich in Basel. Mitteilung der ETH Zürich

Stephen Ferguson's two-year term as Head of Department will end on January 31st, 2022. We look back with him to some of the events which took place - apart from the pandemic - while in office:

| • | | LEHRE
Per Herbst 2021 wurde der neue Studiengang Bachelor Humanmedizin, der im Herbst 2017 als Pilotprojekt startete, ein Jahr früher als geplant verstetigt. Der Studiengang hat sich nach kurzer Zeit so erfolgreich etabliert, dass die Schulleitung keinen Grund sah, am ursprünglichen Zeitplan festzuhalten.
Im Juli 2021 startete die Studiengangsinitiative «Food Science Forward» mit dem Ziel, im Herbstsemester 2023 einen überarbeiteten Studiengang Lebensmittelwissenschaften einzuführen.

Unfortunately we are facing a long delay in the construction of the new GLC building. As a consequence, a lot of extra time and effort has to be put in by professorships, and a special task force had to be established to support those who have to move to a different location temporarily until GLC is ready.
|
| • | | FACULTY
The one event which shook us all was the tragic death of our dear colleague Prof James Mitchelll. He had only joined our department in January 2020 when he lost his life in an accident on 18 November the same year. His colleagues did their best in supporting the family and co-workers who had only moved to Zurich recently. In memory of James Mitchell they established the “James Mitchell Award for Excellence in Collaborative Science” which was awarded for the first time in June 2021.

During the past two years six new D-HEST faculty members have been appointed. In addition, three Professors were promoted from Associate to Full Professor, and one was awarded the title Adjunct Professor: Information about appointments at D-HEST
