HEST.PULSE (04/2022)
Dear all at D-HEST

After the years 2020 and 2021 were dominated by the pandemic and the challenges imposed on us, we thought that this year would be normal again and comparably easy. Unfortunately, we were proven wrong when in February Russia attacked Ukraine and changed our world. We are thankful that ETH Zurich, including several groups within D-HEST, for offering support to students and researchers from Ukraine. We continue to conclude our HEST.PULSE by linking to the information related to "Solidarity with Ukraine".

As the year 2022 is ending, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support in taking our department over the 10-year anniversary into our next decade. Towards the end of the year, there are less urgent news to share in this letter - all are surely busy with year-end activities related to work and to holidays. However, some important information for D-HEST you can read below. It includes the special news that one of our faculty members, Christian Wolfrum, has been appointed as Vice President for Research at ETH Zurich! We congratulate Christian on this new important step and look forward to a good dialogue also in the future.

It is a pleasure to serve as Head of Department. I wish you all a joyous and relaxing holiday break, and I sincerely hope that the next year will bring peace and health to all of you.

Kind regards,
Laura Nyström
Head of the Department of Health Sciences and Technology

We congratulate Prof. Christian Wolfrum for the appointment as Vice President for Research at ETH Zurich starting January 1st, 2023!
Christian has been a central figure in shaping our department and both curricula HST and Medicine, and has served as the director of both study programs during their entire existence, in addition to outstanding research in Translational Nutritional Biology. His new position will mean several changes in the study programs which we will need to address, but we are of course happy to have him in the Office of Vice President of Research are guaranteed also in the future. We wish Christian a wonderful start in the new position!

Daniel Capaul: New resource manager at D-HEST
Daniel Capaul joined the D-HEST departmental staff on December 1. Daniel is a commercial clerk by training and served as controller for WSL, FHNW, and ZHAW and has therefore a strong record in the financial administration of academic institutions. As resource manager, Daniel has the role of department controller and at the same time the first contact point for questions related to infrastructure. He will work closely together with Tobias Walser, our new department coordinator, who will be back from a 3-month sabbatical in January 2023. We warmly welcome Daniel and look forward to working with him!

FACULTY
Farewell to Profs. Michael Ristow and Michael Zimmermann

Michael Zimmermann retires

Michael Zimmermann retires at the end of this year. Heading the Laboratory of Human Nutrition, his research focuses on the health impact of micronutrient deficiencies and on strategies for overcoming such deficiencies. He investigates, for example, the effects of iron fortification in infants and children on the gut microbiome and inflammation. One of his major achievements was to demonstrate that an increase in colonic iron due to poorly-absorbed iron fortificants has a profound negative impact on the gut microbiota in African children and increases gut inflammation.
Michael Zimmermann is succeeded by Ferdinand von Meyenn, currently Assistant Professor with tenure track.
We thank Michael for his work and for his contribution to the success of the IFNH and D-HEST, and we wish him and his family all the best for the future!

Michael Ristow leaves ETH Zurich

Michael Ristow joined our department in 2012 as head of the Energy Metabolism Lab. He started with the goal to promote the extension of human healthspan (rather than lifespan) by identifying modifiable biochemical pathways, which determine or oppose disease-free life of the elderly. His translational research at D-HEST was focused on evolutionarily conserved mechanisms of the control of ageing, particularly the signalling role of metabolic intermediates in the control of lifespan.
Michael has been appointed as director of the Institute for Experimental Endocrinology and Diabetology at the Charité Berlin and will leave ETH Zurich and D-HEST at the end of 2022. We thank Michael for working with us for 10 years and wish him all the best and much success in his new role!
