HEST.PULSE (01/2023)
Dear all at D-HEST

The first three months of 2023 went by so quickly. We have all been busy getting ready for the spring semester, I started my second year as Head of Department, and apart from the regular teaching and research work we do, we brought the external evaluation of D-HEST behind us.

The external evaluation called for a strenuous effort for many of us, and we are all pleased that it went well. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the task of making the department and who we are and what we do, visible in a concise and efficient way. In the end, we enjoyed a great evaluation week with our external reviewers!

A few days after they had left Zurich, we were happy to welcome a new professor at our department: Alexander Harms, Assistant Professor of Molecular Phage Biology. He officially started on April 1st and is a member of the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health. Welcome, Alexander!

Among other highlights in this issue - such as introducing the team Medicine, who takes care of our study program Bachelor Human Medicine - we focus on the commitment of ETH Zurich to accessibility at all leves. We are thankful that LET (the ETH department for Educational Development and Technology) has developed tools for accesibility in education and offers support to lecturers and students. Dr. Anton Bolfing from LET has written an article for us in which he summarizes his thoughts about the topic, and we are pleased to include it in this issue of HEST.PULSE.

Happy Easter Holidays! It is a pleasure to serve as Head of Department, and I thank you all for your continued support.

Kind regards,
Laura Nyström
Head of the Department of Health Sciences and Technology

Where do toxins from tobacco attack DNA?

It is known that toxins in tobacco smoke can change our DNA – but where exactly in the genome they do this has been a mystery. A new approach developed by Shana Sturla and her group now brings light into the darkness. In the future, this could make it easier than ever to determine the safety of many chemical substances.
