Dear reader
Finally, after 1 ½ years, it has been possible to hold lectures with physical presence of students and lecturers again. The campus both in the Zentrum and on Hönggerberg have come back to live! However, the situation has been and continues to remain difficult and challenging. I would like to sincerely thank all members of D-HEST for your continued efforts and extra work you do in order to make studying and working under COVID-19 rules as enjoyable as possible.
As the autumn semester 2021 and with that the year 2021 is slowly coming to a close, we are pleased to provide the second edition of HEST.PULSE. Again we have a wide variety of topics, with news and information about teaching and research at our department. Contents are presented mixed in German and in English.

|
|
| Richard Venz, Collin Ewald and colleagues suggest in a recent publication in eLife that it is possible to make interventions to extend an organism’s lifespan near the end of life that are as effective as if they were performed when the organism was younger.

| Caroline E. Gicaomin and Peter Fischer from the Laboratory for Food Process Engineering investigate the rheological properties of tea film with varied calcium carbonate concentrations and the effect of additions provoked by some cultural tea practices.

| Wie Sport die Durchblutung von Muskeln fördert |
|
|
| ETH-Professorin Katrien De Bock und ihr Team haben in Muskeln einen bestimmten Typ von Blutgefässzellen gefunden, der sich bei sportlicher Betätigung besonders schnell vermehrt und so neue Blutgefässe bildet. Damit können die Forschenden nun Durchblutungsstörungen von Muskeln auf den Grund gehen.

| Bakterien in die Falle locken |
|
|
| Emma Wetter Slack und Kolleginnen und Kollegen der ETH Zürich und der Universität Basel haben eine Impfung entwickelt, die Tiere vor krankmachenden Salmonellen schützt. Diese Bakterien entziehen sich oft der Wirkung von Impfungen, indem sie ihren Schutzmantel genetisch verändern. Den Wissenschaftlern ist es gelungen, diesen Prozess zu manipulieren und die Bakterien in eine Falle zu locken.

| Brain mapping across 16 autism mouse models reveals a spectrum of functional connectivity subtypes |

| According to a publication from Dr Valerio Zerbi, an SNSF Ambizione Fellow in Nicole Wendroth's group, the identification of etiologically-relevant connectivity subtypes could improve diagnostic label accuracy in the non-syndromic ASD population and paves the way for personalized treatment approaches.

| Mikroalgen als nachhaltige Nahrungsquelle |

| Proteine als Nahrung für Mensch und Tier könnten in Zukunft vermehrt von Mikroalgen stammen. Am Singapore-ETH Centre wird Anfang 2022 unter der Leitung von Alexander Mathys, Laborf für Sustainable Food Processing, ein neues Projekt starten, welches das Ziel verfolgt, die Mikroalgenproduktion zu optimieren und neue algenbasierte Lebensmittel zu entwickeln. Am 27. Oktober 2021 wurde das ETH Student Project House eröffnet. Geleitet wird es von Dr. Lucie Rejman, die an der ETH Zürich Lebensmittelwissenschaften studiert und am Labor für Lebensmittel-Verfahrenstechnik von Prof. em. Erich Windhab doktoriert hat. Wir wünschen viel Erfolg mit dem Student Project House!

| An online ethics training course for researchers using health data or samples |
Are you a researcher working with health-related data, genetic data or human biological samples? Have you ever wondered why informed consent is important, or why the difference between anonymized and deidentified data matters? To help researchers answer such questions, the Health Ethics & Policy Lab has launched an online training course on responsible usage of health data for research purposes. The course translates the Swiss Personalized Health Network’s ethical framework into an interactive knowledge map with animations and 8 modules of questions. Completion of the course results in a certificate.
