Dear reader,
It has long been commonplace for us at ETH to conduct meetings and telephone calls online with Zoom or Teams. Traditional telephony - especially landline telephony - is no longer as important as it used to be.
And now, little by little, the telephones are also disappearing from our desks. With the roll-out of telephony via app or browser, ETH employees can use their office phone number from anywhere when connected to the Internet. Because of this, landline telephony is also becoming mobile.
Personalised medicine is an area of research that is attracting a lot of attention. In fact, about one third of ETH professors deal with this subject area. All in their own specific way. IT Services therefore operate a very secure Big Data Analytics and Machine Learning computing cluster, which allows researchers to handle very large and highly sensitive amounts of data in a secure manner. A platform that is second to none.

More workplace mobility thanks to softphone |
Working from home, shared desk or on the go: In a world of work that is constantly changing, mobility is becoming increasingly important. Having access to all information, and being reachable everywhere, has become even more important in recent years.
Telephone and fax used to be the main means of communication, but over the years many other possibilities have been added. A softphone is a software application that is installed on a PC, laptop or mobile device to operate telephony as a software solution.
Nowadays, employees increasingly want to benefit from the advantages of a comprehensive telephony solution when working from home and be reachable via the office telephone number. UC Softphone, which is now being introduced at ETH Zurich, can simply be started via the browser or used as a desktop app, and is no longer tied to a desktop telephone.
After you have made the switch to UC Softphone, the service is available in three different versions. The basic version can be called up via the web browser, does not require any software installation, and can be put into operation immediately and everywhere (Windows / Mac OS / Linux) with minimal effort in around five minutes. Those who want to control reachability based on rules, or use the UC desktop app to configure local device resources, will need around 20 to 40 minutes for the installation and commissioning.
An app also makes it possible to make phone calls on the mobile device using the business number. This means calls can be made without being tied to a specific location, but with an office telephone number. Calls can also be answered even if the computer has already been shut down.

Leonhard Med supports human research |
New technologies are spreading rapidly in medical research: after sound successes of DNA and RNA sequencing or MRI imaging, data collected by individuals themselves with wearable devices such as smartwatches are now on the rise with promising applications in the medical field. This means that the amount of health-related data collected for research projects is continuously increasing, and the demand for secure IT infrastructures is growing. Security is extremely important here: Health data is personal data requiring special protection, and its confidentiality, integrity and availability must be guaranteed at all times. With the "ETH Leonhard Med Secure Scientific Platform", Scientific IT Services (ITS SIS) offers "Security as a Service" for research.
"Health and medicine" are focal points of the strategic roadmap of ETH Zurich. Accordingly, several units are intensifying the digital transformation in medicine. Among other things, the ETH technology platform "digital Trial Intervention Platform (dTIP)", which was founded in 2021, has been commissioned to support ETH researchers in human research. dTIP uses Leonhard Med to collect and store strictly confidential data from study participants. By using the dTIP services and Leonhard Med, researchers can |
• | | demonstrate compliance with Swiss and ETH regulations on data protection, |
• | | receive support from dTIP to help them follow the applicable guidelines and laws in their research projects, |
• | | strengthen data-driven biomedical research by exploiting synergies with national and regional cooperation partners such as BioMedIT, SPHN and LOOP. |

Scientific IT Services – Empowering your research |
The Scientific IT Services division (ITS SIS) provide research-related IT services for computing- and data-intensive research activities at ETH Zurich. The new video offers insight into their services.
Scientific IT Services offer a wide portfolio of services, which it designed and developed together with its scientific customers. The portfolio includes, among other things, resources for scientific computing (HPC), as well as services for scientific data management (including LIMS and ELN functionalities). It provides advice and support on scientific computing, software and data management as well as on data science methods, and it offers training on these topics. They also provide a secure data platform for working with strictly confidential research data and help - based on individual agreement - with the creation, adaptation and optimisation of scientific software, as well as its integration into workflows for data acquisition and evaluation.
