An EPFL mathematician is awarded a Fields Medal
Maryna Viazovska has received a Fields Medal, a prestigious honor often described as the Nobel Prize of Mathematics, for her work on the sphere-packing problem in 8 and 24 dimensions. Previously, the problem had been solved for only three dimensions or fewer. Another Fields Medal is awarded to University of Geneva mathematician Hugo Duminil-Copin.

Eight ETH start-ups win Venture award
The Venture Awards for Swiss start-ups were presented for the 25th time. In addition to the three certified ETH spin-offs DeepJudge, Kaspar& and Versics, the 15 winners included five other start-ups founded by ETH students and alumni.

Chamois in climate change
Since the last ice age, chamois have colonised ever-higher altitudes. This is the result of a WSL study, in which researchers combined genetic information on the animals with computer models. The resulting simulations could also reveal how the animals react to progressive climate warming in the future.

Talented mathematician and cycling sensation
Anna Kiesenhofer has a doctorate in mathematics and was doing research as a postdoc at EPFL on partial differential equations when she qualified for the cycling road race at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and sensationally won the gold medal. She sees parallels between mathematics and cycling which were instrumental to her success.
