Info booth at the science fair Scientifica

NADEL newsletter October 2023
Talking to children about global inequality? The complexity and gravity of the topic often makes us think it is overwhelming and will not work. But we should not underestimate young minds. They are naturally curious. And empathetic. At Scientifica, the science fair in Zurich that attracted over 20’000 visitors, kids could play the “Lottery of Life” at our booth. By spinning a simple lottery machine, one of the hundred balls, reflecting the global income distribution by the number of balls of the same color, went down a slide. We had really engaging conversations, looking at the $10-a-day ball that most of the kids drew, reflecting on what most of the world’s children have to live on a daily basis, and realizing that there was only one “golden” ball in the machine. And we discussed how privilege works in our own lives. What we learned: Kids want to talk about difficult issues. They don’t want adults to sugarcoat them, but they expect adults to explain them and provide solutions – that’s the real challenge.

Fritz Brugger and Isabel Günther

Resource: Words matter
Does language shape thoughts, perception, and practice, or is it our own beliefs and actions that determine the language we use? NADEL's mission is to inspire students to take action for a more sustainable and inclusive world. In this spirit, we have developed an internal Words Matter guide to help us reflect our language in view of our mission and values. Language and the meaning associated with language can change over time. Hence, this glossary is an on-going project and new words and resources will be included in subsequent iterations. We hope this first version can also be useful to others!

Research: Public health policies in large-scale mining
Large-scale resource extraction can have harmful effects on the environment, social well-being, and public health. While environmental impacts are generally assessed, public health consequences are often ignored, especially in African resource extraction projects. A study in Burkina Faso by NADEL’s Joschka Proksik, Fritz Brugger and colleagues, explores policy options to address this gap. A consensus between public officials, mining companies and civil society emerged on the need to regulate public health impacts of large scale mining, but also revealed differing priorities. The study provides a framework to understand shared and varying policy preferences among stakeholders, offering insights for initiating policy discussions and reforms.

Screengrab of the Fairtalk on decolonising images
Fairtalk: Decolonisation in Visual Communications
Images can influence our perceptions of the world - describing relationships and hierarchies between groups of people. When used thoughtfully, they can also challenge power structures, uncover hidden histories, amplify marginalized voices and contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society. Hear from NADEL Senior Lecturer and Fairpicture board member, Medinat Malefakis, and other experts about what decoloniality means for visual communications.
