Our success as a department is the result of our collective efforts
Dear members of our department,

As the year comes to a close, so does my term as department head. So, I would like to start this READ.ME with some reflections. The last two years flew by quickly and much has happened in the department during this time. The role and importance of computer science, both within society (think "digitalisation") and within the other sciences, continued its meteoric rise. For us computer scientists, this is a particularly exciting time as we get a chance to shape the future. As a department, we have been fortunate to be able to grow and to respond to the increased demand in our field.

In the last two years, 14 new faculty members have started within D-INFK, and more are on their way. The number of students and researchers increased by 28% from 2024 in 2018 to 2603 this year. And we have gained more than 8,000 square meters of space in STD, STF, and OAT. Simultaneously, new studies programs were created, such as the joint Master's in Cyber Security with EPFL, and new centres were formed.

Our success as a department is our collective success and the result of our collective efforts. I am glad that I could contribute to this and provide direction and service to the department during these years. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to work closely with department staff and colleagues, as well as with the school administration. While I have found my role as “Vorsteher” sometimes rather challenging (which is good as challenges lead to growth, so thank you!), it is with a smile in one eye and a tear in the other that I step down. I am delighted that the department leadership will be in the fine and extremely capable hands of Mothy Roscoe and I wish our new department management board all the best for the exciting years ahead.

My best wishes to all members of our department for the upcoming holidays and the new year.

Best regards,

David Basin

Tip of the month – fun activities for your 2020 holidays
Following this year’s motto "everything is different", our holidays will be different too. Luckily, different doesn’t have to mean bad. Check out our tips for fun holiday activities!
Do you have a sweet tooth? Then you may want to check out Nerdy Nummies on YouTube. Enjoy your Christmas treats with a cup of hot cocoa while browsing our spotlight archive. And when you feel wanderlust, just explore the world watching free documentaries. If you’d rather watch a movie together with your loved ones you can do so via Teleparty. Thanks to digital solutions, you and your friends can play games at the same table via Tabletop Simulator, hang out with your pals via House Party or puzzle together on how to get out of a digital escape room.
2020: New Year’s Eve goes digital. If you are in the mood to experience an alternative to conventional fireworks, check out Fireworks Arcade (iPhone) and New Year 2021 Fireworks (Android) – it’s cheaper than the real thing and better for the environment. And those who want to start 2021 on time, can use New Year Countdown Timer (iPhone) or New Year's Countdown (Android). "Bleigiessen" (watch, read) - divination by pouring molten lead - has been a longstanding New Year’s tradition in various countries including Switzerland. Challenge your imagination without the dangers of real lead by using an app like the New Year's Oracle for iPhone.
Please meet...
Fábio Porfírio, Lab Coordinator for ETH Game Technology Center & ETH Media Technology Center

Describe what you do in one sentence.
I handle administration and outreach and make sure both centres have everything they need to do amazing work.

What do you like most about your role?
I like organising and running events where we have the chance to showcase our demos and engage with the public.

What is the best advice you ever got?
Surprisingly, the best advice I ever received was from a horoscope: “One shouldn't rush. Instead, release the pressure and set goals that are reachable in one's rhythm.”

What is your favourite place at and around ETH and why?
The view from Dozentenfoyer is unbeatable all year around. Seeing the city, the lake, and the Alps rising in the background is truly inspiring and always raises my spirits.

How do you spend your leisure time?
I love traveling and I'm always planning the next adventure. However, since travel is more difficult these days, I've been focusing my free time on the interior design of my new apartment.
The coronavirus will continue to affect our lives and our work for some time to come. To keep you informed about news, regulations and projects connected to the pandemic, we will add a short COVID-19 section to the end of every READ.ME until further notice.
“In-person exams are essential for ETH Zurich”
Dr. Hermann Lehner
