Dear all at D-HEST
In this September issue of HEST.PULSE, Bill Taylor, the deputy head of department, and I have the pleasure of inviting all staff members of D-HEST to join the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of D-HEST on 30 September 2022 (registration by September 18th). We have prepared an enjoyable afternoon with information, surprises and entertainment. At the apéro that will be offered afterwards, we would like to raise our glasses to the amazing achievements over the last 10 years, as well as to the future of the department.
Apart from the anniversary event, I have important news to share: Giovanni Salemme, who has been department coordinator since the foundation of the department, has left D-HEST and moved on to the staff of the Vice President Infrastructure. I am very happy to introduce to you our new coordinator: Dr. Tobias Walser. Welcome, Tobias! Tobias has already started working for us in July. More about him, as well as a farewell interview with Giovanni, is available below.
Last but not least, I am pleased to announce a faculty appointment and two promotions, and we also have news in the Honors & Awards and Research News sections.
I hope you will enjoy reading this issue of HEST.PULSE, and I wish you a good autumn semester 2022 starting next week.

| Tobias Walser wird neuer Departementskoordinator am D-HEST |

Tobias Walser wird Nachfolger von Giovanni Salemme als Departementskoordinator am D-HEST. Seit Anfang Juli ist er mit einem 40% Pensum für uns im Einsatz. nach einer 3-monatigen Auszeit mit seiner fünfköpfigen Familie wird er sich ab Januar 2023 mit einem Pensum von 80% für das D-HEST einsetzen. Sein erklärtes Ziel sind die Anpassungen der Stabsstrukturen an das stark gewachsene Departement. Dies wird eine Stärkung der operativen und strategischen Dienstleistungen des Stabs beinhalten, die unter anderem eine transparente Rollenverteilung und eine gestärkte Kommunikation gegen innen und aussen beinhalten. Zusätzlich wird das Departement eine/n Ressourcen-Manager einstellen, der/die die Verantwortung für das Controlling übernimmt und Ansprechperson für operative und strategische Finanz- und Infrastrukturthemen sein wird.
Tobias studierte Umweltnaturwissenschaften und schloss mit einem Doktorat in Umweltingenieurwissenschaften an der ETH mit Fokus Gesundheits - und Umweltbeurteilung von Nanomaterialien ab. Nach seiner Stelle im Präsidialstab zur strategischen Hochschulentwicklung war er seit 2021 als Strategieentwickler und wissenschaftlicher Koordinator von "Zurich Exhalomics" tätig. Daneben gründete er zwei Startups in den Bereichen Life Cycle Assessment und Digitalisierung im Sport mit.
Wir wünschen Tobias viel Freude und Erfolg in seiner neuen Aufgabe und freuen uns auf die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm! | Tobias Walser will succeed Giovanni Salemme as department coordinator at the D-HEST. Since the beginning of July, he has been working for us with a 40% workload. After a 3-month sabbatical with his family of five, he will be working for D-HEST with an 80% workload as of January 2023. His stated goal is to adapt the staff structures to the rapidly growing department. This will include strengthening the operational and strategic services of the staff, which will include transparent role definition and distribution, and strengthened internal and external communications. In addition, the department will hire a resource manager who will be responsible for controlling and will be the contact person for operational and strategic financial and infrastructure issues.
Tobias studied environmental sciences and graduated with a PhD in environmental engineering from ETH with a focus on health and environmental assessment of nanomaterials. After his position in the Presidential Staff on strategic development, he served as strategy developer and scientific coordinator of "Zurich Exhalomics" since 2021. In addition, he co-founded two startups in the areas of life cycle assessment and digitalization in sports.

| Giovanni Salemme hat per Ende Juli vom D-HEST in den Stab des Vizepräsidenten Infrastruktur gewechselt. Im Interview blicken wir mit ihm zurück auf 19 Jahre im Dienst von zwei Departementen. | In the April issue of HEST.PULSE, we were pleased to announce that Katharina Gapp had received one of the prestigious ERC starting grants. In today's issue we have more good news: Katharina Gapp was appointed by the ETH Council as Assistant Professor of Epigenetics and Neuroendocrinology in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology! She started in her new role in June 2022. We congratulate Katharina on her appointment and welcome her in our faculty. |

| Im Mai 2022 hat der ETH-Rat Jess Snedeker vom ausserordentlichen zum ordentlichen Professor für Orthopädische Biomechanik am D-HEST befördert. Jess Snedeker ist Professor an der ETH Zürich sowie auch an der Universität Zürich; an beiden Hochschulen wurde er befördert. Herzliche Gratulation, Jess!

| Emma Wetter Slack wurde 2018 zur Tenure-Track-Assistenzprofessorin für Lebensmittel-Immunologie am D-HEST ernannt und nun vom ETH-Rat zur ordentlichen Professorin für Mukosale Immunologie befördert. Herzliche Gratulation!

| On May 1, 2022, the University Medicine Zurich flagship project “STRESS” officially started. The teams of D-HEST researcher Isabelle Mansuy and associated group leader Bogdan Mateescu, as well as the teams of D-HEST researchers Johannes Bohacek and Nicole Wenderoth are involved, in addition to researchers from the University of Zurich, University Hospital Zurich and the Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich.

| Die ETH-Foundation thematisiert in einem Interview im Magazin "Uplift" die Forschung von Catherine Jutzeler, die im Dezember letzten Jahres zur Assistenzprofessorin für Biomedizinische Datenwissenschaften am D-HEST ernannt wurde. Catherine möchte das Verständnis dafür fördern, weshalb es wichtig ist, medizinische Daten zu teilen.
