DataCite fee model: Changes
The EUR 2000.- extra fee for consortium organisations that register more than 10,000 DOIs will be cancelled in 2025. However, should a consortium organisation register more than 100,000 DOIs per year, the consortium fee cap will be removed and the DOI fee will be charged according to the direct member fee model.
For further information please read the DataCite blog on this topic.

DataCite Metadata Schema 4.5
In January this year, the new DataCite Metadata Schema, version 4.5. was released.
The main three changes in the new version are as follows:

- Support for instruments
- Support for pre-registrations and registered reports
- Support for publisher identifiers

The RessourceTypeGeneral controlled list will therefore be completed with the two values "Instrument" and "StudyRegistration".

In addition, changes have been made to different parts of the existing schema (document) to accomodate the new values and to update definitions as well as some corrections.
Please find the new DataCite Metadata Schema here.

Deprecating DataCite Metadata Schema 3 on January 1, 2025.
In December 2023 DataCite made the announcement that as of January 1, 2025, DataCite Members and Consortium Organizations can no longer use Schema 3 and will be required to use Schema 4 to register DOIs and update DOI metadata. The concerned organizations have already been informed by us and asked to take measures.
Schema 3 DOIs will still resolve and be searchable after January 1, 2025, but they cannot be changed or updated, unless they are updated to a Schema 4 version.
For further information please read the DataCite blog in this topic.
