NADEL Newsletter
Dear NADEL friends and alumni,

for our third 50 years anniversary event on 1 December 2021 on Rethinking Cooperation for an Inclusive World we will discuss how our image of humanity influences how we organize societies. For example, the debate whether a universal basic income (UBI) would actually work is – in essence – also a debate about human nature. The dominant narrative that underpins most of today's institutions continues to be inspired by the 17th century British philosopher Thomas Hobbes arguing that the institutions of civilization are needed to restrain peoples’ selfish and ruthless instincts. In his view, a UBI would collapse. The Dutch historian Rutger Bregman, our guest on 1 December, disagrees. He argues that such an image of humanity does not withstand scientific evidence. Our true nature is to be kind, caring and cooperative – despite all our flaws and without denying our capability of being destructive.

Join the conversation with Rutger Bregman on why it is time to rethink institutions by rethinking human nature. And why cooperation and inclusion are possible.
We look forward to another inspiring discussion.

For the NADEL team,
Fritz Brugger and Isabel Günther

Rutger Bregman: Rethinking Society for an Inclusive World
NADEL will host author Rutger Bregman for our third anniversary event on 1 December 2021 at 16:30 CET. The Dutch thinker reconsiders human nature through his lens as a historian and challenges the notion of humankind as selfish utility maximizers. He argues that if people are basically good, this implies very different strategies towards a more inclusive global future. Mr. Bregman has published five books on history, philosophy, and economics. His books "Humankind" (2020) and "Utopia for Realists" (2017) were both New York Times Bestsellers and have been translated in more than 40 languages. The conversation will be moderated by journalist Jennifer Khakshouri and takes place at ETH Zurich, HG E3. Places are limited, please register early.

Chris Humphrey appointed to G20 commission
NADEL senior scientist Chris Humphrey has been appointed by the G20 to an independent review of the financial policies of the World Bank and other multilateral development banks (MDBs). Chris, who has written extensively on MDB financial policies, will join 12 experts to provide recommendations to the G20 on whether and how MDBs can increase the support they provide to low- and middle-income countries without undermining their financial strength. The financial capacity of MDBs has become a critical topic in the world’s efforts to face the effects of the Covid-19 crisis and face the urgent need for sustainable infrastructure to mitigate climate change.

The renewed relevance of natural resource governance in the age of energy transition
The global economy is shifting away from fossil fuels, and oil and gas producers are suddenly concerned about future investments. At the same time, demand for minerals critical to new energy-winning technologies will increase and pose challenges to governance and sustainability of local production. What is needed to ensure transparency, responsibility and sustainability in resource extraction and trade in the age of energy transition? Join the online expert panel discussion on 19 November at 15:00 CET, organised by NADEL and the Natural Resource Governance Institute NRGI, featuring Maria Ramos (Oxfam), Nafi Chinery (NRGI Ghana) and James Nicholson (Trafigura).

Interview with guest researcher Dr. Rubain Bankole on dual vocational training in Benin
Dr. Rubain Bankole recently joined ETH Zurich as a visiting scholar. In an interview, he talks about his dissertation on the dual vocational training system in his home country of Benin - a system that is well known in Switzerland as well. What challenges does the system face and how does he see the role of international donor agencies when it comes to planning and funding? And why do graduation ceremonies bring young apprentices into serious trouble? Dr. Bankole studied the dual vocational training system in Benin as part of the international research initiative TVET4INCOME: Linking Education and Labor Markets, and worked together with Prof. Isabel Günther and Bartlomiej Kudrzycki of ETH NADEL.
