Dear NADEL friends and alumni,

Finally, we can again host public events to engage in larger discussions. We very much enjoyed celebrating 50 years of NADEL with many of you last week. It was the first of five anniversary events on global cooperation towards a more inclusive and sustainable world. Please join us and use the opportunities to discuss. You can find the links for registration below.

The Covid certificate has made large events and teaching at ETH possible again. But the Covid certificate has also been challenged by some because it might feel discriminatory. While this sounds alarming at first, the argument is hard to maintain, as Dario Meili from NADEL writes in the recent ETH Zukunftsblog. Unfortunately, the alarmist debate might divide the Swiss population during a time when we need cooperation more than ever.

One last important news item: the registration window for the next MAS in Development and Cooperation is just around the corner. We are offering two info-events for those interested. Please spread the invitation widely to any change-makers you know.
Stay healthy, stay engaged and we look forward to talking with you in person at one of our events!

For the NADEL team,
Fritz Brugger and Isabel Günther

50 years of NADEL: Come and celebrate with us!
Since the first “Interdisziplinärer Nachdiplomskurs für Entwicklungsländer INDEL” in 1970, NADEL has trained 1500 change-makers for international cooperation, many of whom have taken up leadership roles in government, multilateral organizations, NGOs, universities and the private sector. How has the understanding of development cooperation changed over the last 50 years? Where is NADEL coming from and where does it want to go? Here you can find out more:

Rethinking Capitalism for a More Inclusive World
NADEL hosts renowned economist Mariana Mazzucato from the University College London for our second anniversary event. She is the author of “Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism” (2021) and advises governments around the world on innovation-led inclusive and sustainable growth. In our webinar, moderated by Daniel Hitzig, Professor Mazzucato will discuss reinventing the state to shape our economies so they have wellbeing and inclusion at the centre of how we create value. The online event is free and open to the public.

Treffpunkt Science City: Arm und Reich
The richest 1 percent of the world population owns almost half of global wealth. What are the reasons for that? And what can be done about global and national inequalities? These and other questions will be addressed at "Treffpunkt Science City – Arm und Reich". The free educational program of ETH Zurich will take place from 31 October to 28 November and includes lectures, panel discussions, workshops for kids, demos and tours (only in German). Get engaged with researchers across ETH. NADEL members will speak on “Almosen für Afrika?”, “Gut gebildet und schlecht bezahlt?” and “Wie eine Spende wirkungsvoll eingesetzt wird.”

Why the Covid certificate requirement is not discriminatory
Since the Federal Council implemented Covid certification for restaurants and indoor public spaces, a debate has raged over whether this constitutes discrimination against the unvaccinated. Comparisons have even been drawn to apartheid in South Africa. “Such comparisons blur the concept of discrimination and undermine the rationale for addressing prevailing injustices in our society”, says Dario Meili, who explores broader discrimination in his doctoral thesis at NADEL. The certificate requirement undoubtedly constitutes unequal treatment. But it is out of proportion to speak of discrimination.
