World Food System Center

Dear Friends of the World Food System Center,

ETH Zurich established the World Food System Center to create real-world solutions for the key challenges in our food system. These solutions require collaboration from global and local stakeholders across the entire food value chain. Since its founding in 2011 and subsequent public inauguration in 2012, the Center has brought together researchers from across ETH Zurich with external partners.

The entire team of the Center is looking forward to now celebrate these 10+ Years of Collaboration over the coming months in 2022. Please join us at the events and in the discussions!

Kind regards,
The World Food System Center Team

Celebrating over 10 Years of Collaboration
New Ideas for a Healthy World

Through November this year, we are planning events for our members and the public to celebrate 10 Years of Collaboration and to increase dialogue about the continuing challenges in our food system. We start with a new public exhibition at the Mühlerama Museum in Zurich: Science on Your Plate/Forschung zum Aufessen.

The exhibition takes visitors on the journey of our food. Different stops along the way focus on how the cultivation, processing and consumption of food affects the environment and our health. The exhibition seeks answers to one of the most difficult questions: How do we feed a growing world population?

An opening event for Center members will take place on 10 May 2022.
The exhibition opens to the public on 11 May 2022 and will be in German and English.

Solidarity with Ukraine
After the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, ETH Zurich announced its condemnation of this act of aggression and how it is taking measures to support students and researchers from Ukraine.

The Center, represented by its Steering Committee and Director, condemns the violence and military actions in the Ukraine and express our solidarity with the entire Ukraine. The Center will assist in coordination for member groups to support students and researchers from the Ukrainian (independent of their nationality) and enable information exchange of other support measures put in place by ETH Zurich and other Swiss institutions. We pledge to act as entry point for students and researchers from the Ukraine working within the scope of research associated with agriculture, food and nutrition.

Designing for Food Systems Resilience: A Circular Approach
The Center recently hosted a second short course for food systems professionals on designing for food systems resilience using a circular approach. During the 4-day course, 34 professionals from 21 countries came together to learn and collaborate in a highly interactive online program.

What resulted from a necessity last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, proved to be a very effective way to bring professionals together from all over the world. The connections made, across the globe and disciplines, by working together on food system challenges were clearly noted by the course organizers. A big thank you to all the contributors who made this program such a highly interactive and fun experience for participants!

At the table: How we eat environmentally friendly and healthy
The Spring 2022 Program of the ETH Zurich public science event Treffpunkt Science City focused on how what we eat every day impacts our own health as well as the environment around us.

Through lectures, demos, guided tours and panel discussions, scientists shared their knowledge on issues affecting our daily choices “at the table.” Many Center members were on hand to share their expertise and personal reflections at the events.
