Fresh Perspectives on AEC
It has been a summer to remember! The NCCR DFAB hosted the IASS 2024 Symposium in August, our largest conference event to date! NCCR DFAB researchers joined in the first Design++ Summer School and were introduced to advanced concepts for AI in AEC. Our latest digital timber demonstrator was transported by helicopter to its new location on the old foundations of the Disentis monastery castle in Graubünden and the STEP2 module was officially opened at EMPA NEST.

Timber Structure Caschlatsch
Timber Structure Caschlatsch Ready for Visitors
It is not every day that one witnesses timber modules flying through the air. For the Caschlatsch structure, however, using a helicopter was the only way to assemble the prefabricated timber elements at its remote mountain site. This new structure made up of over 2000 wooden beams was officially opened in September, and is now being explored by curious and ambitious hikers.

STEP2 Unit at NEST Completed
The STEP2 unit at EMPA NEST is now complete, featuring "Cadenza," a unique spiral staircase made from fiber-reinforced concrete. Using 3D-printed molds, each step is just 18 mm thick. Despite its slender design, the structure is post-tensioned to ensure both strength and stability.

LAYERED-A Robot for Surface Finishing
A Robot for Surface Finishing
LAYERED is currently developing autonomous construction robotics for thin-layer printing of plaster. Through the precise build-up and finishing of sprayed material new design opportunities become possible. This novel process reduces waste, increases sustainability, and enhances workplace safety for workers when compared to conventional techniques.
