Dear reader,
The Global Science Film Festival invites you not only to watching a lot of films but also to discuss with filmmakers and scientists behind the films. In this newsletter you also find information about lectures on such diverse topics as healthy guts, the future after the pandemic and the newest findings in stem cell research, the latter starting in early 2022. The Center Aging and Mobility at USZ is pursuing the STRONG study which deals with prevention, participants for the trial are welcome. Now on is a large exhibition on sustainability at the ETH Zürich well worth visiting and in December, the Plant Science Center invites to a symposium on patterns in nature.

Today, more than ever, society is calling upon scientists to address humanity’s concerns and advise those in charge. Particularly in current times we see the need of fostering trustworthy and fruitful communication of scientific content to the wide public. With our motto “the shortest distance between science and society is cinema” we are welcoming you to our 4th Global Science Film Festival. We invite you to become part of a space for exchange and collaboration, where filmmakers, researchers and different audiences share this unique experience of sitting together in a cinema, watching and discussing films.
Program: Films are shown in the categories Full-length Films, Short Films and Scientists-as-Filmmakers. Exciting special events and debates with filmmakers and scientists are essential parts of the festival. You can expect films and talks on nature and ecology, social change, migration, design, artificial intelligence, neuroscience and the covid crisis. Exciting short films and films by young scientists complement the main films. You can find the program on the website.
Crowdfunding: To make the Science Film Festival a success, we need your participation and support. Support the Festival on the wemakeit platform here. Rewards include tickets to the films of your choice or festival passes. If you want to be part of it, we highly recommend you to join the crowdfunding. Every contribution to the crowdfunding campaign is welcome! It is also possible to donate a (small or large) amount of your choice (without reward).

| Together for the Sustainable Development Goals: Exhibition and Events at ETH Zurich |
How can we fight global poverty and inequality, protect the planet and ensure that by 2030 everbody enjoys peace and prosperity? What contribution can science and technology make? In 2015, the 193 UN members have adopted the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. At the heart of this global action plan for promoting human well-being and protecting the environment are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Together for the SDGs” is a two-week exhibition and event programme that raises awareness and inspires action for the Sustainable Development Goals. In the exhibition, the visitor can engage with the SDGs through art and learn about examples of research and education at ETH Zurich that contribute to global sustainable development. The accompanying events offer the opportunity to exchange ideas with others.

| Healthy and Active 60+: DARM-STARK. Public Event of the University of Geriatric Medicine Zurich, 5 November 2021 |
The University Department of Geriatric Medicine invites all interested parties to attend the public event on 5 November, 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Participation is free of charge and the event will be livestreamed.
Various speakers will shed light on exciting aspects of gut health, nutrition, exercise and the pelvic floor. Donna Leon, internationally renowned best-selling author and dedicated Do-Health-Ambassador, will enrich the event with an introductory talk. The program block "Gruuve mit Buuchgfühl" is for active participation and motivates to exercise in everyday life.

| A Future After The Pandemic |
This semester's Wissen-schaf(f)t Wissen lecture series is dedicated to the topic "A future after the pandemic" where researchers from different fields discuss how SARS-CoV-2 has changed our lives and may change our lives in the future. This lecture series promises an in-depth analysis of the positive and negative impacts that the pandemic may have on our world of tomorrow.
The presentations are held in German and take place from 18:15 – 19:45 on 22 November, 29 November and 6 December. The events will be held at KOL-F-101 (Rämistrasse 71) and will be live-streamed via Zoom. For more information and registration, please visit the website.
Wissen-schaf(f)t Wissen is organised by the Zurich Center for Integrative Human Physiology (ZIHP), a competence centre of the UZH that promotes the dialogue between science and society.

| Patterns in Nature and Plant Sciences |
This year’s Symposium of the Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center «Patterns in Nature and Plant Sciences» will highlight advances in plant (data) science research. An outstanding international panel of speakers from a variety of key research areas will answer questions such as: How to find patterns in data? How to find patterns in nature? And most important, what do they reveal? Scales reach from molecular patterns, geometries of plant growth, patterns of differentiation up to patterns of global biodiversity and land use change - providing an integrated view of planetary function.
The Symposium will take place on 8 December 2021, ETH Zurich Auditorium Maximum (HG F30), Rämistrasse 101, Zürich. Participation is free of charge. Register here.
Your poster abstract is welcome: Awards will be given to the three best poster presenters and the Scientific Committee will select 4 poster abstracts among the submissions received for a flash talk. Don’t miss this opportunity to give a 10-minute plenary presentation.

| iPSZurich lecture |
After two successful and diverse years iPSZurich Lecture we are happy to announce that we will proceed in 2022. In case you have not heard about iPSZurich yet: It is a forum to disseminate state-of-the-art iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cell) research, build relationships among peers, renew and establish collaborations and strategies. The forum brings junior scientists from Zurich and experts working within the field of iPSC together in order to exchange current research, techniques and methodologies. Furthermore, on 14th February 2022 a symposium focused on highlighting iPSC research in Switzerland is planned to take place in Zurich. Save the date! Further information will follow soon.

| Active and Healthy in Old Age: STRONG - Study of the Center Aging and Mobility of the USZ |
The Center Aging and Mobility of the University Hospital Zurich is daily on the trail of "healthy" aging and is looking for women & men 75 years and older for its ongoing study "STRONG".
In the study, the effect of a home exercise program and a powder made from isolated whey protein or a comparative powder on the frequency of falls is investigated. In addition, the effect of these two interventions on muscle health, physical function, and quality of life is studied. This study is a randomized controlled trial, which means that there is always a comparison group in the interventions and the allocation is randomized.
The study is being conducted under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Heike A. Bischoff-Ferrari, DrPH, Director of the Clinic for Geriatric Medicine at the University Hospital Zurich and Head of the Center for Aging and Mobility (ZAM). The Center for Aging and Mobility is part of the Department of Geriatric Medicine at the University Hospital Zurich and is the research center of the Chair of Geriatric Medicine and Research on Aging at the University of Zurich. The study center is located at the Zurich City Hospital, Waid site.
