Newsletter 2/2021
Dear reader,

Today we would like to inform you about two lecture series coming up this spring: the Zurich Center for Integrative Physiology (ZIHP) invites a broad audience to lectures on currently much discussed topics such as the importance of animal research. Our colleagues at the LSSS organises more peer-related talks between senior researchers and young scientists. We also announce «Science: Polish Perspectives» and its first hybrid conference in Switzerland in May 2021 and the Women in Research video campaign. Filmmaking for Scientists and support for innovative start-uppers are other topics you find in this newsletter.

So there is a variety of new activities, which still – admittedly – mostly are planned for a virtual audience. If the pandemic situation allows it, we all will be back in person as soon as possible.

Best regards,

Life Science Zurich

Wissen-schaf(f)t Wissen: Program Spring Semester 2021
Wissen-schaf(f)t Wissen: Program Spring Semester 2021
The Zurich Center for Integrative Human Physiology (ZIHP) promotes the dialog between science and society and makes the research performed within the ZIHP visible and understandable to the public. ZIHP members and their research partners present topics of general interest in the field of medicine and physiology. The public is invited to participate to the discussion. The presentations are in German and take place from 18:45 – 19:45 on 4 April, 3 May and 17 May. Depending on the corona situation, the events will be held online or at the University of Zurich.

For more information, see the website.
NCCR Women
Women in Research - video campaign
Across Switzerland, 22 National Centres for Competence in Research (NCCRs) bring scientists together to address topics of strategic importance, from robotics to quantum physics, sociology or biomedicine. While the main goal of these NCCRs is to foster cutting-edge collaborative research, they also actively aim to promote women’s careers in science.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of women obtaining the right to vote in Switzerland, all NCCRs have joined forces in a campaign that highlights the importance of women in the Swiss research landscape. From the International Women’s Day on 8 March until 31 October, the 50th anniversary of the women’s first vote, each NCCR will present a series of videos portraying the work of some of its women scientists. These short films illustrate the key roles that women play in all fields of research in Switzerland.

Nine of the 22 NCCRs currently running in Switzerland focus their research on life science questions. Seven of them are either co-hosted by ETH Zurich or the University of Zurich, or they include research groups based at these institutions. They all develop interdisciplinary approaches to explore the functioning of life, understand and develop treatments against various diseases, or recapitulate biological mechanisms in synthetic systems or materials. You can find more information about all NCCRs here.

Stay tuned for the portraits of women researchers at ETH and UZH and at further Universities.

5th Science Filmmaking Marathon
5th Filmmaking Marathon
In the filmmaking marathon, researchers receive training in the use of tools for dramatic storytelling and filmmaking. In communicating their research through film, they make their science accessible for a broader audience. Course participants learn the basics of visual storytelling and filmmaking. Working in groups supervised by professional filmmakers they will produce short films during three intensive course days. The produced films will be screened as premieres at the 4th Global Science Film Festival (19 – 28 November 2021) with a special award for the best film.
• Participants: Scientists, Postdocs, PhD and Master students enrolled at any Swiss higher education institution can apply for participation
• Date and place: 16 - 18 September 2021, University of Zurich
• More information and registration: Filmmaking Marathon Website
Apply between 1 February and 30 June 2021
LSS Seminar Series
Life Science Seminar Series
Would you love to meet a leading scientist from your field of research? Would you like to network with peers more often? The Life Science Seminar Series (LSSS) organised by a group of Life Science PhD students at ETH and University Zurich makes it happen! Maybe you were among those who voted for favourite speakers – we invited them. The guest speakers will give talks and hold discussions with students and postdocs in small groups and 1:1 sessions.

We are pleased to announce the first speakers for the upcoming seminar series taking place in May and June 2021:
• Marc Tittgemeyer, Translational Neurocircuitry, MPI Cologne
• Carolina B. Lopez, Antiviral Immunity, WashU
• M. Angela Nieto, Cell Movement and Plasticity, CSIC-UMH
• Hans Clevers, Tissue Development and Cancer, Hubrecht Institute

SPP Zurich 2021. Where Science and Industry meet
SPP Zurich 2021
Science: Polish Perspectives is a series of events connecting Polish researchers working around the world, both in academia and R&D (research and development) sectors, as well as international researchers interested in research opportunities or collaborations with Poland organized by the Polonium Foundation. SPP events are held in English and open (and free!) to everyone interested in networking, research opportunities in Poland, or simply in high-quality research!

On 7 and 8 May 2021, the first ever SPP hybrid conference in Switzerland will take place at the ETH in Zurich and online. It will focus on how science & industry can support each other, work together, and inspire a transnational change. The conference is multidisciplinary and creates space for students and researchers from various research disciplines: from life sciences, through physical and applied sciences, to social sciences of all kinds.

We are now looking for poster & talk presenters - so apply by 31 March, tell us a bit about yourself and your project, and join us in Zurich or online in May. Register now!

New rules will apply to those starting their doctoral studies at ETH in the autumn. After two extensive consultation rounds, the ETH Executive Board passed the revised version of the Ordinance on Doctoral Studies on 26 January 2021. The new guidelines make it compulsory for doctoral students to have a second supervisor and stipulate more precise rules for collaboration between professors and doctoral students.
