NADEL Newsletter
Dear NADEL friends and alumni,

As we get ready for the summer break and enjoy the new freedom of travel, many countries find themselves amidst the third wave of the pandemic without vaccine deliveries in sight. The growing health inequality is shocking as is the declining interest in countries where the virus seems better controlled. The new textbook on development economics co-authored by Isabel Günther and Kenneth Harttgen explains why such inequalities are not only unfair but also inefficient. The policy brief by Dario Meili further illustrates one of the many challenges to strengthen public health: access to toilets. A host of other development relevant topics will be covered in the nine NADEL courses offered in autumn 2021 for which you can apply now. And finally: don’t forget to register for NADEL’s 50 year anniversary events that are just around the corner, starting in October.

Stay healthy, stay engaged

For the NADEL team,
Fritz Brugger and Isabel Günther

50 years NADEL
50 years of NADEL: Come and celebrate with us!
Even if many things have changed over the last 50 years, the objective of NADEL has not: cooperation for a more inclusive world. Since 1970, we have trained more than 1100 individuals for careers in international cooperation. To mark the anniversary, we are planning an event series to share new perspectives on international cooperation. Our guests will be: activist Rose M. Mutiso and international policy advisor François Bourguignon (1 October 2021), innovation advisor Mariana Mazzucato (22 October 2021) and author Rutger Bregman (1 December 2021). Let yourself be inspired! We are looking forward to seeing and discussing with you.

New book
Introduction to Development Economics
In recent years, many countries have developed rapidly, while others have stagnated. Even within countries, there are big differences between the rich and the poor. "Einführung in die Entwicklungsökonomik" (published in German) explores the reasons for this phenomenon, shows routes for global poverty reduction and discusses future challenges. Selected topics included in this introduction to development economics are poverty and inequality, state and politics, social policies, population growth, education and health, environment, globalisation and international cooperation.

When are shared toilets a solution for the urban poor?
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #6 calls for the "availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all". Shared toilets in urban areas could potentially contribute to reaching this goal. Yet, they are to date at best considered "limited" due to the lack of quality standards and hence an inadequate solution for sanitation. To address this shortcoming, Dario Meili from the ETH Development Economic Group, together with Sandec-Eawag and partners in Kenya, Ghana and Bangladesh, collected data from shared toilet facilities and their users in three cities. The authors provide recommendations on how to identify high quality shared sanitation.

ETH NADEL courses in the autumn semester 2021
Impact investing – buzzword or wave of the future? In the new two-day course “Leveraging Private Impact Investors in Development Cooperation” offered on 23 and 24 November 2021, NADEL’s Chris Humphrey and guest lecturers demystify impact investing – the idea that it is possible to “do good” as well as make money with certain types of investment – for people working in development cooperation. In addition, NADEL is offering eight training courses on topics related to the 2030 Agenda in autumn semester 2021. Registration is now open.

NADEL Podcast
Agenda 2030, civil society and cinema
The 2030 Agenda calls on all countries of the world to support sustainable development: ecologically and socially, nationally and worldwide. However, implementation is lagging, says Martin Fässler, former Chief of Staff of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), in the latest episode of the NADEL podcast “1.90 pro Tag”. In an interview with Fritz Brugger, the NADEL graduate (1988) also discusses why the space for civil society is narrowing, why cinema is apt for promoting understanding across countries, and Switzerland’s bid for a seat on the UN Security Council, among other topics.

NADEL PhD students
A warm welcome to Frank Otieno Odhiambo!
Frank Otieno Odhiambo (left in the picture) has joined the group of doctoral students at the ETH Development Economics Group and is doing his PhD on inclusive education in Kenya. The project evaluates whether classes delivered through a speech-enabled mobile app can be an effective tool to improve educational outcomes and mental well-being for learners with disabilities. Before starting his PhD, Frank worked with Innovations for Poverty Action in Kenya. He holds an MA in Management from the University of Nairobi (Kenya) and a BSc in International Relations and Diplomacy from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (Kenya). Frank is one of three E4D Doctoral Fellows 2021.
