New DOI System for the DOI-Desk
Since our own DOI system, which harvests data from an OAI-PMH interface, was reaching its end of life, we decided to have it reprogrammed and made more user friendly. With the financial support of swissuniversities’ P-5 program, the project “A new software environment for the registration of DOIs” took place between June 2021 and August 2023. The launch of the new system was in mid-May and the migration was finished by the beginning of June.

Repository responsibles can access the new system with their Switch Account as before (either their institutional login or via a VHO Account).

As the new system is mainly based on the old one, most functionalities have stayed the same. Among the few things that are new is the handling of errors: If an error occurs, it is shown in the error list of the system. However, if you correct the error, it will not be removed from the list automatically but stay there. You can change the status of fixed errors to the status “handled” yourself. That way you always have a clear overview of the errors in your repository. You will find information on how to do this in our manual. There you can also find an overview over the most current errors.

Should you need to redirect a DOI to another DOI (e. g. in case of duplicates), this needs to be done via DataCite Fabrica. We recommend doing all manual changes to a DOI in DataCite Fabrica. We are happy to assist you in the handling of Fabrica, if you have not used it before. The new DOI System is mainly for harvesting data.

If you have questions concerning the new system, please do not hesitate to contact us at doi@library.ethz.ch.

Project Abstract

ETH Zurich DOI Consortium
For two years we have been a DataCite DOI Consortium. There are currently 25 consortium organisations who register with us. Altogether, the 25 organisations registered nearly 300'000 DOIs in 2022. All of these are non-commercial organizations, and most of them register DOIs for repositories or research data.
What are the benefits of being part of our DataCite consortium?

- Organisations do not pay the yearly DataCite Membership fee of EUR 2000.-
- Organisations profit from our expertise in registering DOIs for over 10 years
- Organisations can register either via the DataCite APIs directly or use the DOI-Desk's DOI system, which harvests the metadata from an OAI-PMH interface

Please note that in case of DOIs for journals we recommend registering via Crossref.

Share your Metadata Schema Suggestions with DataCite
The DataCite Metadata Working Group improves and updates the Datacite MetaData Schema. It is important to them to both get feedback on the upcoming metadata schema and receiving inputs from the community. You can suggests metadata schema changes (via this specific form) or give input concerning suggestions that have already been made (via the DataCite MetaData Schema Trello Board).
For more information about this process please read the blog by Kelly Stathis, see link below.

Invoicing 2023
As every year, we will send out the invoices in the first quarter of this year. The costs for 2023 are based on the number of registered DOIs in the previous year. Please notice that if you register more than 10'000 DOIs in a year, there is an additional fee of EUR 2'000.-.
