Anja Harder, Chief IT Security Officer IT Services, Dieter Gut, IT Procurement and Information Security Officer (ISO) at ITS as well as Domenico Salvati, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), General Secretariat, (from left) pull together for information security and start looking for ideas for the IT Security Awareness follow-up campaign at ETH Zurich. |
Follow-up campaign - IT Security Awareness |
Domenico Salvati has held the position of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at ETH Zurich since April 2019. This role was previously held by Dr. Rui Brandao, Head of IT Services. Among other things, the CISO's task is to raise awareness of information security and IT security at ETH Zurich. You can help shape the next campaign with your ideas, and you could also win something in the process."Good-bye monsters"! Five years ago the green monsters appeared at ETH Zurich and started their mischief. The IT security awareness campaign is now coming to an end and the "little monsters" are disappearing. Help shape the IT Security Awareness follow-up campaignWe, the CISO and the Information Security Officer Organisation (ISO), are currently collecting ideas, themes and core statements, which we want to take into consideration in the next awareness campaign, if possible. Creativity really impresses us, so we will also be rewarding the best idea with a gift voucher. So join in until end of January 2020 and help us shape the next campaign at ETH Zurich. Speaking of awareness: Information security and IT security concerns us all. In the new web-based training course, "e-Learning Compliance Information Security", we teach you the most important principles of IT security using videos and questions. Find out more about the topic and the ISO team in the ITS Blog. Anja Harder, Chief IT Security Officer for IT Services Domenico Salvati, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), General Secretariat

The BSSE can now relax as it benefits from the comprehensive data and storage service of IT Services. On the super fast data highway over a distance of 100 km there are almost no limits. Willi Engeli (ITS SD), Dr. Vernon Bailey (ISL at BSSE) and Dr. Tilo Steiger (ITS SD), from left. |
Storage collaboration over a distance of 100 km |
The amount of data we are producing is increasing constantly and research data, in particular, is increasing disproportionately. At ETH Zurich as well as other locations. Growth and also performance when it comes to handling large amounts of data is increasingly becoming a key functionality. At the same time, the reliable provision of data as well as the self-provisioning of storage is now taken for granted. Local data performance can now be enjoyed by remote locations without sacrificing the efficient storage capabilities on the ETH campus. This is made possible by a central data storage system based on new AFM (Active File Management) technology.
Advantages
|
• | "Small" local storage system on site |
• | Rule-based automatic data transmission to the ETH campus |
• | Data backup and centrally managed storage systems on campus |
• | Integration of all services offered through centralised storage |
• | Utilisation of virtually unlimited storage capacities |
• | Cost reductions through hierarchical storage management |
• | High transmission rates up to 50 TB / per day |
|
Over 100 km distance - collaboration on the data technology levelThe central ITS storage services work closely with the IT services at the "Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering" (D-BSSE in Basel). The large amounts of data generated at the BSSE can now be stored locally (cache system) and transferred directly to the Hönggerberg site (home system). If the amount of data in Basel becomes too large, rule-based storage space is created in the cache system. At BSSE, the cache system was equipped with 220 TB of fast SSD memory. The cache and home systems are operated by the ITS. This allows IT Services at BSSE to concentrate even more on supporting and assisting its researchers. Feedback D-BSSEDr. Vernon Bailey, Head of IT Services & Consulting (D-BSSE): "In successful and close collaboration with ITS SD, BSSE has now transferred over 1 PB of its data to a central memory system. The local high-performance cache provides our users, of which there are more than 300, with latency-free access to our active data. This provides us with affordable scalability for our growing storage needs, and the transfer of services helps us focus our local IT resources on the individual needs of a growing department." Automated IT Service Management |
The "IT Shop" service management portal has been available to ETH Zurich since the beginning of last year. This is in addition to the Software Shop. The IT Shop enables ETH members to obtain and manage computing services from IT Services, irrespective of time and place.
The IT Shop enables IT services to be obtained around the clock on a self-service basis. This ensures that the contractual framework conditions are complied with and that any invoicing is carried out in accordance with the financial regulations. Among other things, in the IT Shop you can
|
• | Increase the size of NAS shares |
• | Order databases |
• | Top up print credit for students |
|
To make this possible, numerous IT systems are connected to the IT shop via various interfaces. This includes:
|
• | ETHIS (ETH SAP Portal) |
• | NetCenter (ICT networks portal) |
• | OTRS (ticket system) |
• | Active Directory (IAM and Compliance) |
• | Saferpay (credit card payments) |
|
As soon as a service request is created, workflows ensure the necessary actions are orchestrated in the different target systems. In an ideal situation, the ordered service is available within minutes. The goal is to integrate the entire IT service catalogue into the IT shop in future. To this end, we are constantly adding new services and further developing existing ones in cooperation with the responsible areas. Why don't you visit the IT Shop too? Long term storage free from 01.01.2020 |
IT Services provide a long-term storage system based on magnetic tapes, which is very energy efficient. As a result of this, they support good scientific practice when it comes to the handling and storage of scientific data. In order to meet the increasing requirements in this area, the incentive fee for long-term storage (LTS) will be abolished and the service offered for free. Further information on LTS can be found on the web.
