Edible research goes storytelling

Our science communication project “Edible research goes storytelling: Participative design of an interactive art-science exhibition on food value chains” aims at facilitating an intensive dialogue about the importance of sustainable food systems for food security around the world between secondary school students, their teachers and scientists.

The chosen media for this dialogue are storytelling workshops and an interactive art-science exhibit with augmented reality features. We plan to create food system stories (e.g. a farmer’s journey from his farm to the market, the story of an imported tomato from production to consumption or the story of a nutrient that cycles along the food system) with secondary school students in workshops with a recognized expert on storytelling. In a next step, these food system stories will then be incorporated into an interactive exhibit and brought to life with augmented reality (AR) features, which provide in-depth insights and more visual content on the contribution of science towards sustainable agriculture and food value chains.

The final created artscience exhibit will be presented at secondary schools, continuing education events at the Zurich University of Teacher Education (PH Zurich), ETH Scientifica, various ETH stands, school events of “ETH unterwegs”, World Food System Center (WFSC) and other public science events.

Check out our "Milestones" section to read how the project has been developing.

“Edible research goes storytelling” is a continuation of the SNF Agora project, “Edible Research: Hands-on learning for Sustainability in Agroecosystems” (2016-2018). The Sustainable Agroecosystems group worked with teenagers and teachers to raise awareness about the environmental and socio-economic implications of food production. More on project
