ETH Zurich DOI Desk

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is used to identify electronic documents such as research reports, doctoral theses and digital images. The ETH Library runs the ETH Zurich DOI Desk. The DOI Desk is an official DOI registration agency for Swiss higher education and research institutions, for libraries, archives and similar institutions.

Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

Research reports and results published online are easy to cite with a DOI such as 10.3929/ethz-a-000565688 (“Eine neue Bestimmung der Moleküldimensionen” by Albert Einstein). DOIs are unique and more permanent than URLs. You can resolve a DOI directly in your browser (external pagehttps://doi.org plus the DOI, for example external pagehttps://doi.org/10.3929/ethz-a-000565688).

DOI registration

ETH Zurich’s DOI Desk registers DOIs for primary data (research data) and for secondary data such as working papers, articles or doctoral theses. This service is available to all organisational units from Swiss higher education and research institutions as well as libraries, archives and similar institutions, as long as they are not for-profit organisations. The service is not available to individuals. The basis for registration is an agreement with the DOI Desk that documents all technical and organisational matters.

Fees

DOI registration is free for all ETH Zurich organisational units. Other academic institutions and non-profit organisations must pay the fees defined by DataCite.

DOIs for individual publications

Members of ETH Zurich can publish their documents or datasets in the Research Collection and receive or reserve a DOI there. We recommend that other authors publish their work in external pageZenodo.

DataCite

The DOI Desk is run by the ETH Library and external pageDataCite. ETH Zurich’s IT Services provide technical support. DataCite is an association and official DOI registration agency within the external pageInternational DOI Foundation (IDF). The association wants to simplify online access to research data and improve the visibility of this data. The ETH Library is a member of DataCite.

DOI Desk newsletter

We publish an English-language newsletter once or twice a year with updates on recent developments in DOI registration. The newsletter also keeps readers informed about the latest from DataCite and the IDF.
