Sciena is entering a well-deserved retirement
Six years ago to the day, on 29 August 2019, we launched the Sciena information platform. This is a good age for a website, and a fitting time to pause and celebrate what has been achieved while considering the future.

Sciena has succeeded in making content accessible on one website from all six ETH Domain institutions — ETH Zurich, EPFL, PSI, WSL, Empa and Eawag — accessible on one website. News items are automatically extracted from each institution and machine-translated where necessary.

While the implementation of DeepL was innovative at the time, it is now part of everyday life. Other things have changed too: the decline of Twitter means that the most important channel for content distribution is no longer available. Various language models now facilitate the discovery of information about teaching, research, knowledge and technology transfer within the ETH Domain.

This is why the time has come to say goodbye to Sciena. This is our final newsletter, in which we look back at the most popular articles on Sciena. We will be archiving the website shortly. We have enjoyed keeping you updated with regular news via the newsletter, and we would like to thank you very much for your time and loyalty.

Our goal remains to inspire internal and external target groups with the diverse and exciting content of the ETH Domain. In future, we plan to break new ground, utilise state-of-the-art technologies and harness the full potential of artificial intelligence.

A contradiction at the heart of physics
25.08.2023 – Quantum mechanics describes the forces that hold the world together on the smallest scale. The theory of relativity explains the world at the cosmic level. The two seem incompatible – and a unifying theory is nowhere in sight.

New study on invasive palm in Ticino
14.03.2023 – The Chinese windmill palm (Trachycarpus fortunei), a popular postcard subject in the southernmost Swiss canton, originates from Asia and is extremely resistant to cold. The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL has now investigated the potential impact of its massive spread in the forests of Ticino and proposes targeted control measures.

Better prevention as the key to healthy living
14.03.2025 – For many people, the last few years of life are still shaped by illnesses and limitations. Healthy ageing could be promoted with effective prevention strategies and new treatment options. Researchers in the ETH Domain are working on this objective at all levels.

Breakthrough study of hormone “crosstalk” in breast cancer
16.06.2022 – Scientists led by EPFL have successfully engrafted breast cancer cells on mice, allowing them to study in vivo the cross-talk between the estrogen and progesterone receptors that hampers hormone therapies. Their findings suggest that endocrine therapy may need to be personalized, and that abrogating progesterone receptor expression can be a therapeutic option.

Fluoride in groundwater: for the first time, global map shows all risk areas
11.08.2022 – As an additive in toothpaste, it protects our teeth from decay. But when fluoride occurs in nature in larger quantities and accumulates in groundwater, it can become a hazard for our health. For the first time, Eawag scientists have produced a detailed map of global fluoride contamination in groundwater and shown which regions of the world are particularly affected.
