“Carbon dioxide can be turned into a valuable resource”
The Swiss energy system is expected to be climate-neutral by 2050. The key to this is science: CO2 can be converted by electrolysis into raw materials for chemicals or synthetic fuels and the cost of a fossil-free energy system can be calculated using modelling.

“We need an energy shock”
We all understand the importance of energy security. To maintain it, we need to chart the right course. But how can we know what that is? A conversation with ETH professors Annalisa Manera, Tobias Schmidt and Massimo Filippini.

A new advanced manufacturing center opens up in Neuchâtel
The manufacturing industry is going through a period of profound change, driven in part by the advent of 3D printing and other advanced technologies. In order to support Swiss industry, EPFL and CSEM have created the Micromanufacturing Science & Engineering Center (M2C), a new focal point for pure research, technology transfer and everything in between.

Aquatic insects are less likely to be invasive
Insects that live entirely or partly in freshwater have a much lower proportion of invasive species than insects that live on land. This is shown in a study by the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology Eawag and an international team.

Forest in autumn colours (Photo: WSL)
Early autumn colours are a bad omen
In the extremely dry summer of 2018, beech leaves discoloured in many places as early as July. Now, WSL studies show that up to 10% of these trees died – a multiple of the natural mortality rate. The summer of 2022 is likely to have further affected beech trees in dry locations.
