| Quantum leap in the quantum sciences |
Quantum physics has a long tradition at ETH Zurich. Now it is further expanding its teaching and research activities. Around 150 students are completing the novel Master’s degree programme in Quantum Engineering, there is a “Quantum Center” and quantum computers are to be built in the ETHZ-PSI Quantum Computing Hub.

Glowing glass droplets on the ISS
|
Together with researchers from Ulm and Neuchâtel, Empa will soon be studying material samples on the ISS. The material in question are super-hard and corrosion-resistant alloys of palladium, nickel, copper and phosphorus – also known as "metallic glasses". A high-tech company from La Chaux-de-Fonds, which produces materials for the watch industry, is also involved.

Swiss Science celebrates Hansjörg Wyss
|
More than half a billion Swiss francs have been granted over 10 years to groundbreaking research projects in Switzerland in two Wyss Centers in Zurich and Geneva and the Wyss Academy in Berne. This makes entrepreneur and philanthropist Hansjörg Wyss one of the major private donors for Swiss science. Wyss was celebrated as the laureate of the 2022 Gallatin Award of the Swiss American Chamber of Commerce. The laudatio was given by Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin.

Nominated: High-precision X-rays of breast tissue
|
Marco Stampanoni, Zhentian Wang and their team have been nominated for this year’s European Inventor Award. The two scientists have been conducting research at PSI and ETH Zurich for more than ten years, in the pursuit of improved diagnostic methods for the early detection of breast cancer. The nomination for this prestigious award is in recognition of their pioneering work. The winners will be announced at the award ceremony on the 21 June 2022.

Urine treatment: from trial and error to innovation
|
What has been a purification process in wastewater treatment plants for decades can also be used decentrally or semi-centrally as a recycling process for nutrients. Early separation of "solid and liquid" plays a key role here. It allows for flexible solutions in terms of process technology, especially in the treatment of urine.
